FESTIVE STATISTICS (article first published : 2001-03-4)

Reports show that the Playhouse Company’s 2000 Festive Season was highly successful with a diverse offering of productions. The Playhouse Company has repeatedly come “under fire” for investing in such a festive package but with the financial success of this festive season package, critics are having to take note.

The Playhouse Company averaged over 70% attendance over this festive season period, an almost 30% improvement from the 1999/00 season.

“In-House/Supported by” (IHS) festive statistics indicate that for the year 2000/01, The Playhouse Company has exceeded all budgeted income calculations for this period by approximately R200,000 with a total of 60 IHS performances of productions performed over the months of November/December 2000.

Topping the bill for average attendance was the one-off Is’cathamiya Festival at 88% followed by Romeo & Juliet performed by the Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company in the Drama at 75%. Also in the Drama was the Indian dance extravaganza Taal at 78% followed by Mbongeni Ngema’s The Zulu in the Opera at 74% and the children’s show Catch Khalulu! in the Sanlam Loft at 69%,

Attendance figures prove that for the year 2000/01, a more focused look at the relationship between outside hirers and IHS type relations has become a factor in boosted box office revenue.

For the year 1999/2900, outside hirers enjoyed 67% of Playhouse venues for hire and 33% was secured for Playhouse productions. For 2000/01, the Playhouse Arts, Education and Development Department occupied such venues 42% of the time (a considerable increase over the previous year) with outside hirers enjoying 58%.

A further statistical breakdown indicates that the outside hirers department at The Playhouse managed and completed 38 events for the period 2000/01, with 28 IHS-type relations and a substantial 71 functions during the same period. The Cellar also impressed with an improved total of 17 productions for the year 2000/01.
