THE ART OF GIVING (article first published : 2000-12-27)

Benefactors of the arts will be able to give a lasting gift over this festive season by making a donation to The Arts and Culture Trust (ACT). The Trust is appealing to the public to open their hearts - and their purses - so that it may continue to fund the innovative and life-changing projects currently implemented.

"Sponsorship of the arts is in a state of flux," says ACT head, Andries Oliphant, "and public support is critical in order to continue funding artistic and cultural initiatives. Given South Africa's rich cultural and artistic heritage, it would be a travesty if this good work cannot be continued. Over the festive season, people tend to dig deep into their pockets to provide gifts for family and friends. We encourage the public to extend this joy of giving to something that will provide a legacy for future generations - the preservation of our diverse and abundant heritage through art."

Nedbank has stepped in to support ACT in its funding campaign, and has set up a bank account for public donations. A staunch supporter of the arts, Nedbank has also pledged to meet public donations rand for rand up to R100,000 - in effect, doubling the public's efforts.

"We appeal to everyone who has a few rands left after their festive season shopping, to donate it to ACT," says Nedbank Marketing GM, Greg Garden. "Or give someone a gift with a difference - their name on a donation to the Trust. Whether it is R10 or R10,000 every rand makes a difference. So let's join hands in celebrating the spirit of giving this season, and give a very special gift - an expression from your heart to the spirit of those who are creating the soul of our country."

The Arts and Culture Trust (ACT) was established in 1994 in response to the mounting pressures on arts sponsorship and funding. It has funded a plethora of artistic endeavours - and touched the lives of thousands of people - across the full spectrum of the arts. With capital grants from Nedbank, Sun International and the then-Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, ACT aims to address imbalances in disadvantaged communities whilst devoting special attention to enriching cultural life by breaking down barriers and promoting mutual understanding and reconciliation.

Donations can be deposited into the Nedbank Arts of Giving Campaign account, No 2908951401, or visit www.nedbankarts.co.za for more information.
