DARRYL FOR ARTSLINK (article first published : 2000-12-3)

Six of the best South African arts journalists, spearheaded by Darryl Accone, have banded together to form a new voice for the arts under the umbrella of Artslink.co.za, the country's unique entertainment news service.

In January next year Accone, presently editor of The Star Tonight, joins Artslink.co.za full time to work with the specialist writers - Gwen Ansell, Paul Boekkooi, William Pretorius, Victor Strugo and Peter Townshend - who syndicate their writing through Artslink.co.za They will pen previews, reviews, news, interviews and features on film, theatre, classical music (Boekkooi), jazz (Ansell), popular music (Townshend), books (Pretorius) and wining, dining and radio (Strugo).

Without traditional constraints, these reviews can appear on the Web within hours of the event. An integral feature will be a daily ArtRap taking a provocative look at the arts and culture scene, interrogating issues and asking questions that the mainstream media do not. Overall, this enhanced coverage is a deepening and broadening of Artslink.co.za's founding spirit of commitment to South African arts and culture. It comes in the wake of severe cutbacks in arts coverage in all media, and especially daily newspapers.

Accone believes that now more than ever arts is the Cinderella of the media. "Being able to work with Artslink.co.za founder and visionary TJ de Klerk is a privilege. He has seen the future of arts coverage and is now enabling the six of us to make it work on Artslink.co.za. I am relishing the prospect of working with the team, doing more writing, returning to reviewing theatre and examining issues and cultural policy."

Among Accone's tasks will be to roll out arts coverage in a marketing association with Nedbank Arts Affinity. This will give Nedbank Arts Affinity clients a weekly newsletter on the arts and culture scene, with an accent on events and happenings, which will be e-mailed free to Nedbank Arts Affinity clients who sign up to receive this service. The newsletter, plus news and reviews of Nedbank-sponsored events - Imax Theatre, Cinema Prive, Cinema Nouveau will be posted on www.nedbankarts.co.za, which will be maintained by Artslink.co.za. Tickets for Nedbank events can also be booked on this site and a host of special benefits and discounts will be available to Nedbank Arts Affinity clients.

The website is already operational. This month it will carry the Nedbank campaign The Art of Giving to raise money for the Arts and Culture Trust. For more information click www.artslink.co.za or contact webmaster TJ de Klerk at info@artslink.co.za or phone (011) 487-3689.
