DRAMA DEPARTMENT AWARDS (article first published : 2000-11-22)

Technikon Natal's department of drama studies recently held its annual awards ceremony and recognised those students who had made outstanding progress during the year.

Winners of academic awards were Gulshan Mia (first year), Hlengiwe Lushaba (second year) and Georgina Konigkramer (third year).

Hlengiwe Lushaba jointly received the award for Most Improved Dancer as well as joint awards for Outstanding Singer: Female with Winile Majozi, and Supporting Actress with Ntando Cele. Tarryn Leek received awards for General Merit For Creative Achievement and Most Improved Singer.

Bryan Hiles (currently appearing in the Playhouse Cellar in Snow White and Several Dwarfs) received awards for Contribution To The Department (jointly with Sibongiseni Mbambo), Best Choreographer, Best Actor (jointly with Thabo Godide for Enemy and The Importance Of Being Earnest). He was also honoured for his dedication and professionalism as were Siyanda Duma (who also received a General Merit for Dance), Thabo Godide, Shanna Peterson, Lethlogonolo Sechogela And Mlungisi Zondi.

Sibongiseni Mbambo received awards for Outstanding Singer Male and Supporting Actor for his performance in Colored Museum. Awards for Backstage Assistance and Most Improved Performer went to Thandeka Sibisi.

The award for Outstanding Dancer (Female) was jointly awarded to Shanna Peterson and Yolanda Shabalala, while Shanna also gained the Best Actress award for her performance in The Importance Of Being Earnest.

Other awards were Denton Douglas (Best Newcomer), Mlungisi Zondi (Outstanding Dancer: Male) and Natasha Hosken (Stage Management).
