EVENT SAFETY GUIDE (article first published : 2000-10-21)

Feedback is requested from the entertainment and eventing industry on The Event Safety Guide, a publication made available through the Technical Production Services Association, Southern Africa (TPSA). It covers a wide variety of crucial issues such as planning and management; venue and site design; fire safety; major incident planning, and communication as well as crowd, transport and waste management. It offers advice on structures; barriers; electrical installations and lighting as well as food, drink and water and sanitary facilities.

All types of presentations either large or small are covered including those that are unfenced or un-ticketed, road shows and all-night music events, or those of a classical music or arena nature. For productions such as Splashy Fen, there is information on Camping. Sections are devoted to merchandising and special licensing as well as amusements, attractions and promotional displays. Sound aspects are covered like noise and vibration and special effects include fireworks and pyrotechnics.

Important health and safety responsibilities feature facilities for people with special needs as well as medical, ambulance and first aid management. There is also advice on Information and welfare; children; performers; TV and media.

The Event Safety Guide (Edition 1) is on sale through the Technical Production Services Association, Southern Africa (TPSA) at R100. Under copyright license from Her Majesty's Stationery Office (UK) this book is a South African version of the British Event Safety Guide. Where possible, UK legislation and references have been removed and South African legislation from the SABS 0400 and the Occupation Health and Safety Act have been added at the end of each chapter.

Each paragraph in the Guide is numbered and TPSA request that the industry and relevant Government departments give comment by December 2000, advise of existing or forthcoming legislation and also give input on matters that have perhaps not been explored in the UK Guide but are pertinent to South Africa. The second edition will then go to SABS
