PUTTING BUMS ON SEATS (article first published : 2000-10-2)

Forming part of the popular SAfm radio programme The Inner Ear, Nigel Vermaas draws on his 18 years of experience in the theatre to present Putting Bums on Seats. This is a documentary programme in which he examines the way Cape Town institutions are coping with keeping theatre alive in the Western Cape.

As he says: “Gordon Mulholland can’t see any future for the theatre but Fiona Coyne says it will never die. Mannie Manim is listening at the Baxter, Mike van Graan is marketing the Nico, Ashraf Johaardien sees his play as a work in progress. Guy Willoughby says theatre can’t afford works in progress. Roy Sargeant believes it all begins with the word and Diane Wilson is angry about being kicked out of the Nico!”

During The Inner Ear, Nigel Vermaas will mention that the Baxter is riding high with the success of Suip! and Glass Roots (seen recently at the Hilton Arts Festival), both products of the Baxter New Writing Programme. Also the Nico is holding breakfasts, art discussions and play-readings. But what are the strategies that lie behind these initiatives?

All will be revealed in The Inner Ear on SAfm on October 11 at 20h00, (repeated on October 15 at 09h30).
