ACT AWARDS (article first published : 1999-06-2)

June 30 is the deadline for nominations for the annual awards of the Arts and Culture Trust of the President (ACT) which will again recognise individuals and institutions that have supported the development of arts and culture in South Africa. Instituted in 1998, the awards recognise excellence in 11 categories, eight of which carry monetary prizes (R10 000 each). Winners will be announced at a ceremony in Cape Town on September 23.

The general public is invited to submit nominations for the various categories. These must be clearly stated and the following: information provided: nominee’s name and signed agreement to be nominated; a motivation for the nomination; the name of the company/organisation/person offering the nomination; a CV of the nominee or a list of activities of the institution.

The ACT awards honour categories not normally recognised by other structures. Among these, is the arts and culture journalist award which is open to any South African radio, TV or print media journalist (freelance or permanent), in any part of the country, who writes about/reports on the arts and culture, whether on a daily, weekly or monthly basis

Last year, D’ARTS magazine (to be found on the artSMart site) won the print publication of the year award. This category is open to any South African daily/ weekly/monthly newspaper, journal, newsletter or magazine which as a whole (or a section of which) reports on, provides information, debate or constructive criticism about any aspect of arts and culture.

Stand by, because next year artSMart believes it will be a strong contender for the electronic media award. This is open to a South African radio or television programme or internet service which provides information, comments or reports on any aspect of arts and culture.

The award for publicist of the year is open to any media publicity company, agency or department of an institution whose primary task is to generate publicity, audiences and potential markets for any aspect of arts and culture.

The education project award could include any agency or organisation involved in advocating arts and culture education anywhere in the country or any formal/non-formal programme which imparts skills (artistic, administrative, educational, etc.) in the arts, at primary, secondary, tertiary or adult level.

Any project or programme undertaken by any formal or non-formal institution in any of the cultural, government, private or business sectors (any arts and culture discipline) is eligible for the cultural development project award, provided that the primary aim is the development of the arts (skills, infrastructure, building audiences, etc.) or access to the arts among historically disadvantaged communities.

Any person in cultural organisations, government, the business community or activities concerned primarily with administration, policy, funding or management of the arts and culture or any aspect of it may be nominated for the award for arts administrator of the year.

The lifetime achievement award will go to anyone, dead (posthumous) or alive over the age of 60 who has spent the best part of their lives in service to arts and culture, not necessarily as a practising artist (although they could have practised as an artist in any field), but in other areas supportive of the development and flourishing of arts and culture .

The three non-monetary categories include awards for the city/town and province of the year in support of the arts as well as an international arts sponsor of the year:

Nominations should be sent to: The Administrator, Arts and Culture Trust of the President, Suite 126, Private Bag X18, Rondebosch, 7701, or faxed to (021) 689-7589, by 16h00 on 30 June 1999. No extensions to this date will be considered. A list of suggested criteria for each category is also available from the ACT administrator.

artSMart editor Caroline Smart was one of the three final nominees for the arts and culture journalist of the year award last year.
