HARRY OPPENHEIMER DIES (article first published : 2000-08-23)

Prominent businessman, former politician and humanitarian Harry Oppenheimer died after a short illness on August 19

"South Africa has lost one of her greatest sons. Not only has he left an indelible imprint on her business and politics but also on the lives of the many people from all walks of life whom he helped. Above all, he was a perfect gentleman," announced Anglo American Corporation chairman Julian Ogilvie Thompson and CEO Tony Trahar on behalf of the company founded by Harry Oppenheimerís father.

One of the world's leading businessmen, Harry Oppenheimer was the chairman of Anglo American for a quarter of a century and chairman of De Beers Consolidated Mines for 27 years until he retired from those positions in 1982 and 1984 respectively. He was a member of both boards of directors from 1934, retiring from the Anglo American board after 48 years on relinquishing the chairmanship, and from the De Beers board in 1994, after serving exactly 60 years.

Harry Oppenheimer lived with his wife Bridget at Brenthurst, their home in Johannesburg. Also on the estate is the Brenthurst Library which was built in 1984 to house his fine collection of rare Africana books, manuscripts and paintings, which he described as "footnotes to history", and a magnificent garden in which he and Bridget delighted. The library also houses the offices of The Brenthurst Press, established in 1974 to make available to a wider audience some of the important unpublished material in the collection.

As befitted the manís extraordinary humanitarian nature, funeral arrangements will be private. There are no flowers by request but donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the charity of the individualís choice. A memorial service will be announced in due course.
