FNB VITA AWARDS (article first published : 2000-08-22)

The FNB Vita Regional Theatre Awards system has, in consultation with the TMSA, added some new categories for the current Vita year, which runs from June 1, 2000, to May 31, 2001.

The new list categories for the awards comprises Best Lighting Design, Best Costume Design, Best Set Design; Most Promising New Actor, Most Promising New Actress; Best Performance in a Comedy; Best Support Actress and Best Support Actor (both of these will include comedy, drama and musicals).

There’s also Best Performance by a Male in a Musical, Best Performance by a Female in a Musical; Best Lead Actor, Best Lead Actress; Best Script of a New South African Play; Best Musical Revue (a compilation of music with no story-line); Most Outstanding Ensemble Performance in Musical Theatre; Best Director, Best Musical Theatre Production, Best Production (Drama/Comedy).

In addition to the new awards, there has also been a restructuring of the judging system in the regions. More judges have been appointed in each city to ensure that at least a minimum of five judges will attend all the productions presented in their area. The judging process will continue to be administrated by FNB Vita Awards in Johannesburg.

There will not be any end-of-year judges meetings held and the results picked up from the judges’ forms will be inputted into a computer which will calculate the winners through a point system. The FNB Vita Regional Theatre awards are presented annually in the four major centres Bloemfontein, Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg.
