DURBAN VITA WINNERS (article first published : 2000-07-24)

The winners of the FNB Vita Regional Theatre Awards for 1999/2000: Durban were announced at a function held this afternoon at the NSA Galleries.

Productions involved were Ek, Anna Van Wyk written by Pieter Fourie and directed by Marthinus Basson; Out Of Bounds written by Rajesh Gopie and directed by Tina Johnson; Popcorn written by Ben Elton and directed by Greg King; War Cry written by John van de Ruit and directed by Tamar Meskin and The Well Being written by Andrew Buckland and Lionel Newton and directed by Lara Foot-Newton and Mercury Rising written and directed by Duncan Royce.

Other productions achieving nominations were The Elvis Las Vegas Extravaganza produced by Colin Law and Duncan Royce and directed by Dina DeVine; Follies 2000 produced by Pieter Toerien, written by Kevin Feather and Malcolm Terrey and directed by Owen Lonzar, Peace in the Valley written and directed by Jerry Pooe; Defending the Caveman written by and directed by Rex Garner; Jack & The Big Stalk produced by Eric Hutton, written by Anthony Stonier and directed by Peter Court.

Ek, Anna van Wyk walked off with no less than six awards. These were best production, best director (Marthinus Basson), best lead actress (Antoinette Kellermann), best support actor (Brian Webber), best support actress (Nicola Hanekom) and best lighting (Bryan McNeilage).

Popcorn won best lead actor for Michael Gritten and both set and costume design awards for its director Greg King.

War Cry won Best Script of a New South African Play for John van de Ruit and Most Promising Performance by a New Actor or Actress for Tyron Akal.

Mercury Rising won the award for best musical production and Amray-Faye achieved best performance in Musical Theatre for The Elvis Las Vegas Extravaganza

The judges for the FNB Vita Regional Theatre Awards 1999/2000 were Hilda Grobler, Gowrie Naidoo, Robin Singh, Caroline Smart and Jacky Vermaas.
