HLENGIWE’S A NOMINEE (article first published : 2000-07-23)

Hlengiwe Dube is among the three finalists for the art and culture category of South Africa's Woman of the Year Award which honours extraordinary women who have changed lives through the arts.

Hlengiwe, who works at the African Art Centre, has undoubtedly changed the lives of many people who would otherwise have languished in poverty and wasted their artistic talent. She has helped people to understand that as long as they have two hands, they can never starve.

Motivated at an early age to make and sell beadwork by her mother and grandmother, she sold the beadwork to The African Art Centre. Hlengiwe now teaches women how to make commercially viable beadwork and beaded sculptures as well as teaching them how to deal with the HIV/Aids pandemic.

The other two finalists are from Gauteng. They are Phyllis Klotz, artistic director of the Sibikwa Community Theatre Project, and Sheila Masote, administrator at the Soweto Music Conservatoire and PRO for the African Cultural Organisation of South Africa.

South Africa's Woman of the Year Award, sponsored by Shoprite Checkers and SABC3, was launched five years ago as a major initiative for National Women's Day to pay tribute to achieving women throughout South Africa. The Award, which comprises seven categories, provides role models for others to emulate.

The winner of the arts and culture category will be announced on August 9 (National Women's Day) at a gala event which will be recorded and broadcast on SABC3 from 19h00. She will also stand a chance of becoming the overall winner.
