CREATIVE CITIES INSTALLATION (article first published : 2000-06-9)

As part of Retreks: unSUNg CITY and in conjunction with the Creative Cities segment of the Urban Futures Conference hosted by the University of the Witwatersrand and the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Council, an installation will be prepared. This will accompany the presentation of the Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology Dr Ben N'Gubane at the Electric Workshop in Johannesburg on July 11.

The installation intends to prove the "newsworthiness" of art, culture and cultural industries in South Africa, giving them the right to be treated in the national and local press with the same degree of importance as sport, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and politics.

The installation idea will use the well-known South African phenomenon of the banner headline - with ten large screens bearing the names of some of the principal newspapers in this country, installed in the Electric Workshop. Onto these large banner screens, changing "headlines" will be projected, carrying headlines of art, culture and related cultural industries in South Africa.

The organisers need to collect "headlines" from as many sources as possible. All is needed is the headlines themselves written in a snappy sound-bite form. Facts behind them will, however, need to be substantiated. For example, it would be good to know when a South African band is playing to audiences in Finland or a choreographer gets stunning reviews in Paris. It would also be good to know how many people were employed during a music festival or about training successes, etc. Downfalls, scandals and bad news also make headlines!

The organisers need about 800 headlines. They should be forwarded by June 7 to e-mail: retreks@iafrica.com (With artSMart being "down", we apologise for the lateness of this article but maybe the organisers will still take ideas.)
