SATURDAY WIRED (article first published : 2000-05-20)

Tomorrow (May 20) from 11h00 to 13h00 on SAfm104-107, the Saturday Wired team headed by Michelle Constant offers the latest update on entertainment, arts, music with just a little sex appeal thrown in for good measure.

This weekend the programme takes a closer look at the culture of women in “men's” sport, focusing in particular on women soccer players. There’s news of London women's soccer scene and presenters will be chatting to Banyana Banyana's coach as well as the only woman in South Africa to own a soccer team, Ria Ledwaba.

Other personalities featured are Keanu Reeves and his band called Dogstar as well as Gloria Estefan and Angela Bassett who are acting in the new Wes Craven film Music of the Heart. Under discussion will be the trend of musicians who turn to acting and actors who turn to singing: such as actress Kate Normington just back from the UK whose band will be performing in Gauteng next week. On the rock singer gone 'actor' angle, Jon Bon Jovi talks about his film work and his bands new album Crush.

The question is asked: “Is classical music eurocentric and does it have a place in Africa?” The question is answered in depth with more information on The Buskaid Soweto String Project and what the term “operama” means with the staging of opera Nabucco.
