JANICE BECOMES ARTISTIC (article first published : 2000-04-1)

For some years, the Johannesburg Civic Theatre has had as its chief executive and artistic director Janice Honeyman, renowned nationally and internationally as an artistic icon in theatre.

Built by the Johannesburg City Council, the Civic has been subsidised by the local authority. Recent restructuring exercises undertaken by the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Council have, however, had an impact on the venue. A significant aspect of this has been a decision that Janice should relinquish the position of CEO and concentrate on her strengths as artistic director in terms of vision, productions, outreach, educational programmes, networking, exchanges and media relations.

The Civic Theatre will be advertising for the position of CEO. This person will take overall responsibility for operations and will work closely with Janice so that they jointly ensure relevant and appropriate artistic productions and financial viability to put the Civic Theatre on the road to sustainability.
