MEDIAEVAL FEAST (article first published : 2000-03-18)

Celebrate St. George's Day in a special traditional way by joining the British Cultural & Heritage Association at Greensleeves Medieval Kingdom at Camelot in Hillcrest on April 16*. Patrons are invited to step back in time and enjoy a traditional feast with friends in celebration of St. George's Day*. The Ancient Ceremony of the Roast Beef will be officiated by HM Vice Consul in Durban and, as tradition demands, she will be assisted by the chef and beefeater, with all the fun and festivity the event allows.

Legend has it that George, a knight of Cappaqocia met with a community who were terrorised by a dragon to which they were obliged to supply human victims! The next victim was to be the King's daughter. As any good hero would, George rode forth, met the dragon and held it prisoner with his lance. He returned to the city with the princess, slew the dragon, urged the people to accept Christian baptism and rode off refusing to take any reward. Thereafter the cult of St George spread quickly through the Roman world. During the middle ages, St. George became a favourite Saint of the crusaders and is believed to have become the English patron Saint in about 1384 AD when Edward the Third (Edward the Confessor) was on the throne.

Tickets for the St. George's day celebration lunch are R55 and the lunch includes Yorkshire pudding, Roast Beef and a selection of vegetables (there will be a vegetarian alternative), followed by English Apple Pie and tea or coffee. A cash bar will be available and those attending are encouraged to wear a red rose buttonhole for St George. Booking essential. Phone (031) 202-6174 (office hours).

*The celebration is not being held on the official date this year as it falls during the Easter holidays.
