AWARD FOR EVITA (article first published : 2000-03-10)

The Women’s International Center is presenting the Living Legacy 2000 award to Mrs Evita Bezuidenhout, who will receive it in person at the WIC's seventeenth annual celebration of excellence and humanitarian contribution. This will take place on March 11 in San Diego, California, USA.

Living Legacy 2000 will celebrate 'Women who led us into the 21st Century”. The ceremonies will be dedicated to Audrey Hepburn, legendary actress and humanitarian. Former honorees include Melina Mercouri, Maya Angelou, Greer Garson, Helen Hayes, Empress Nagako, Peggy Lee, Gloria Steinem, Pearl Bailey, Judith Anderson, Lucille Ball, Hillary Roddam Clinton, Simone Veil, Mother Theresa and others. Mrs Evita Bezuidenhout will be the first South African to join their ranks.

Pieter-Dirk Uys, who will receive the WIC's International Legacy Award, will reciprocate by performing a special show called An Audience with an African Queen. at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego on March 13. In this show Mrs Bezuidenhout, wearing a special dress designed and made for the occasion by Errol Arendz, will feature alongside other familiar South African characters as portrayed by Uys. US President Bill Clinton will also appear, along with Secretary Madeleine Albright.
