LOERIE AWARDS (article first published : 2008-07-27)

For the fourth successive year, the who’s who of the advertising industry gathered in Margate for the Loerie Awards Festival the most looked-forward-to event on the advertising industry’s calendar.

The South Coast was prepared to roll out the red carpet for thousands of the country’s most creative advertising and communications gurus who attended the two-day festival to see who wins a bird and to rub shoulders with advertising hot shots. The Loerie Awards followed hot on the heels of the South Coast’s world record breaking braai of 1,739kgs of seafood in a day, attended by at least 7,200 visitors from around the province and country, and proves the region’s ability to host events of magnitude.

The Loeries has also brought many other benefits to the South Coast and the importance of show casing this destination to the advertising industry cannot be under estimated.

“Last year several television adverts were made in Margate, and several films including the IMAX film Wild Ocean and Hollywood movie Blood Diamond starring Leonardo di Caprio, have been shot on the South Coast in the past three years,” she said.

Tourism KwaZulu-Natal’s research shows that of the more than 4,000 delegates who attended the event last year, 83% were Loerie Awards delegates from Gauteng and Cape Town, and a further 17% were from KwaZulu-Natal.

“Over the years, many of these industry masters have demonstrated outstanding ability whilst producing adverts and movies on location in KwaZulu-Natal, and we hope that our warm hospitality and sunny skies will encourage them to consider the province and the lower South Coast as their location of choice for their next project,” she said.
