ROCK CHALLENGE HOLIDAY BEHAVIOUR (article first published : 2008-07-8)

Participants and educators alike have been working very hard in preparation for the ARA Be Your Best™ Rock Challenge™. A lot of time and effort has already gone into the planning and staging of the event and the June holidays might come as a welcome break for learners.

With the prospect of holiday comes the unfortunate reality of boredom. It is a wide known fact that boredom leads to negative behaviour. One of The ARA Be Your BestTM Rock Challenge’sTM main objectives is to shift negative energy to generating positive attitudes. This includes changing negative activities and behaviour to include uplifting results.

Elana Afrika from 5fm agrees: “I wish there were more outreach programmes and information available while I was still a learner! With the Be your Best Rock Challenge, you get the best of both worlds - taking part in a great learning initiative, teaching and living the right dream for everyone taking part. Well done, and to everyone watching and learning – information has never been this much fun!”

This being said, the ARA Be Your BestTM Rock ChallengeTM would like to suggest a few fun, social activities that participants can take part in that will aid in passing the time, uplifting the community and initiate positive behaviour:

The ARA Be Your BestTM Rock ChallengeTM would like to deploy an army of ‘litter bugs’ attacking litter head on. Individuals can participate through picking up litter off the street or spreading awareness to others.

Take up the challenge to go a whole day without saying something negative about someone, something or situations.

Work on preparing a whole meal without using electricity! Write out pamphlets with energy saving tips and give them to all your neighbours. Do Your Bit!

These and more ideas will be published in a bi-weekly newsletter that goes out to all participating schools. The idea is to adapt and teach the younger generation to be creative over the holidays.

The ARA Be Your BestTM Rock ChallengeTM reaches KZN on August and takes place at the Durban Exhibition Centre on August 27 (Primary Schools) and August 28 (High Schools).
