2008 ECR HOUSE & GARDEN SHOW (article first published : 2008-07-3)

Search local, switch local, be local, live local. Draw new ideas and inspiration for your home and your busy lifestyle from everything that is local at the 2008 East Coast Radio House & Garden Show.

This popular lifestyle Show goes local this year, the Local Rocks theme celebrates everything that is local and all that makes us proudly east coasters. With a homegrown view, exhibitors will be showcasing home and lifestyle goods available right here on the east coast, taking a renewed look at local inspiration.

With 100,000 shoppers in 10 days, this is the must-do one-stop shopping event on the east coast. Fitting in perfectly with a busy lifestyle it places more than 300 different ‘stores’ under one roof for your convenience.

A new addition to the Show this year is the Local Rocks Hall, designed to give exposure to local talent and entrepreneurs. Smaller, less established businesses will be able to market their wares at the Show, creating a platform for them to show off through their arts and goods from beaded chandeliers to hand painted linen and homeware, which will also go on sale at the Local Rocks Hall.

Local master glass-maker Guido van Besouw will dazzle with his pieces that capture the local spirit and culture. With his unique style of mixing carefully selected tones together, he creates streams of glowing patterns with vibrant colour that translate into absolute craftsmanship. The ‘rockstreams’ range of his studio blown décor glass will be shown off by local interior decorator Anne York at the Show.

Also look out for a local Gemstone cutter who will cut and polish precious stones in front of you. From brilliant rubies to rare stones like the sought after Tanzanite, this craftsman will transform these stones into exquisite pieces of jewellery.

Experience culinary creations from Hillcrest’s Heritage Theatre, winners of the coveted Plate of Appreciation from the Internationally famous ‘Chaine Des Rotisseurs’. From gourmet Bunny Chows to live demos by Chefs at Home, showgoers will be spoilt for choice. Local cuisine like Durban’s famous Bunny Chow with an east coast twist will make an appearance. Celebrating our melting pot of cultures unique to this province this one of a kind specially shaped and baked ‘hut’ style loaf resembles a traditional Zulu hut. To accompany these gourmet bunnies, traditional ‘Natal’ curries and rice are also on the menu.

The 2008 East Coast Radio House & Garden Show runs until July 6 at the Durban Exhibition Centre. Tickets R45 (R25 senior citizens over 60) and children under 16 free (with adult). More information on 031 368 7630 or visit www.housegardenshow.co.za
