99% ZULU COMEDY SHOW (article first published : 2008-04-24)

The most trusted brand of Zulu stand-up comedy in KZN, 99% Zulu Comedy Show, presents another fabulous evening of comedy and music on April 24 in the Playhouse Drama Theatre. In association with the Playhouse Company, the show will see a mix of two of KZNís most funny guys, Simphiwe Shembe and Justice Kubheka, sharing the stage with Trevor Noah who is arguably the freshest and most talented comic in the industry yet. Musical comedy will be provided by Vusi Ximba and the MC for the night will be Mandla Thebethe.

Call themselves Durbanís Funniest, Simphiwe Shembe and Justice Kubheka are well-known within the Zulu comedy circuit and have wowed many audiences since they launched their careers for the first time on the very same show a couple of years back. Known for their clean and swear-free brand of comedy, they will share brand new material.

The young and fresh Trevor Noah started his career in the entertainment industry on the popular local soapie Isidingo and soon thereafter hosted an educational show on SABC2 for two years. While still on TV, Noah started hosting his own radio show Noahís Ark on Gauteng radio Station Yfm. He co-anchored the SABC1 hit entertainment tabloid-styled Real Gobhoza and is fresh from appearing on the Strictly Come Dancing TV show as a finalist.

Moving into the world of comedy, Noah quickly amassed respect as a comedian and performs at many of the comedy shows around the country including Blacks Only, State of the Nation and the Vodacom Campus Comedy Tour. Performing at countless clubs around the country, Noah also MCís at Dacqs Cafť in Pretoria and Rhazoos at Morula Sun Casino. Noah does company functions countrywide, either performing or working as an MC. His amazing impersonations and acting skills are complimented by the fact that he understands and speaks no less than six South African languages. A regular feature at Podium Entertainmentís comedy clubs in Johannesburg, Trevor Noah is an all-round performer and an immensely talented young man.

99% Zulu Comedy Show continues to re-brand and re-invent itself to provide its sold-out audience with as much humour as possible. To this end, they are bending the comedy rules somewhat by including the pronominal musician Vusi Ximba in the line-up. No stranger to making people laugh, he will open both comedy sets. His light-hearted and witty lyrics have earned him a huge fan-base that has been hungry for his live performance.

The show will be hosted by the veteran television comedian Mandla Thebethe, otherwise known as Bongo from his hit sitcom Family Bonds.

Supported by the Durban Arts, Ilanga and Ukhozi FM the show kicks off at 19h30 on April 24 in the Playhouse Drama and tickets R80are available at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers. For more information phone the Playhouse on 031 369 9555.
