EAST MEETS WEST (article first published : 2008-02-22)

The organisers of the second fabulous cultural crossover fashion show, East Meets West, are looking for exciting designers to showcase their work. East Meets West will be held at the Imbizo Conference Centre at the Sibaya Casino and Entertainment World from May 30 to June 1.

East Meets West is dedicated to sharing the rich and diverse culture of Bollywood with a South African audience that is truly as esoteric as the art itself, says co-organiser, Bhavnesh Narotam. It is committed to creating a professional platform for local artists of stature by exposing young dancers, actors, singers and models to achieve their dreams even as they aspire to attain international stardom.

The project is headed by two emerging energetic young professionals: choreographer Shivani Kara and dancer / performer Bhavnesh Narotam. They hosted the event for the first time last April to critical acclaim and great support and went on to host a similar event in Johannesburg in the latter part of last year. They are hoping this concept becomes an annual event and are considering taking it to some of the smaller towns in and around Durban as well. Both have worked on various shows and want to continue to add some extra creativity and magic by staging a fashion fusion show with a difference.

Shivani Kara explains: East Meets West aims to offer audiences productions of the highest international quality. This will instil not only a sense of cross-cultural understanding and pride but also result in the creation of employment opportunities over a cross-section of the population. Our vision is for a platform for the entire fashion genre to be displayed in a unique and creative way: the fusion of both Eastern and Western Fashion and entertainment, utilising talent from different race and cultural groups.

There will be three shows: May 30 will be the Premiere Night, followed by an afternoon and an evening show on May 31 and an afternoon show on June 1 The venue is the Imbizo Conference Centre, Sibaya Casino, Durban.

Shivani Kara and Bhavnesh Narotam are calling for participants in particular, designers who wish to use this opportunity to showcase their garments. Interested parties should contact Shivani Kara on 083 776 9222 or Bhavnesh on 072 349 6165.
