EAST MEETS WEST (article first published : 2007-11-14)

India meets Europe meets Africa in the East Meets West concept, resulting in a stylish blend of fashion, dance and all-round entertainment. Globalisation hits the catwalk in spicy style on December 1 and 2 when the East Meets West fashion show takes place at the Kyalami Theatre on the Track in Johannesburg.

The shows are the brainchild of choreographer Shivani Kara and dancer/performer Bhavnesh Narotam, two KwaZulu-Natal professionals who have set their sights on producing a fashion experience with a difference. The Eastern-inspired extravaganza impressed Durban audiences earlier in the year.

“Bollywood movies are hugely popular in South Africa, and we want to show local audiences that there is far more to this rich culture than meets the eye,” explains Bhavnesh Narotam, who heads up the organisation Eastern Moves in partnership with Kara.

“The fact that borders are blurring across the world means that exciting cross-cultural exchanges of ideas are taking root in all spheres of creativity, including fashion,” adds Kara.

Fashionistas should prepare for an exotic feast of fashion, as exciting young South African designers display how a melting pot of cultures can produce innovative results. Expect cutting-edge designs that blend the traditional with the contemporary, the playful with the elegant, and the casual with the luxurious. Audiences will be treated to creations by the cream of up-and-coming local designers, such as Tony Mabaso of Umoya, Sifiso Sabelo, Priya Patel and Amina Hamid of the Memsaab label, who recently participated in her second consecutive Durban Fashion Week.

In addition to sporting Priya Patel’s intricate mendhi skin decorations, the models will have the benefit of Givenchy’s in-house make-up artist, David White, who will be adorning them in exquisite Eastern colours and textures. Brenden Mendez, a Top 32 finalist in the Idols 2007 competition, will be performing.

The premiere night of East Meets West takes place at the Kyalami Theatre on the Track on December 1, with afternoon and evening performances on December 2. Corporate tables may be booked for the Saturday night show, for which limited tickets are available. TRhere is an impressive list of give-away prizes on offer.
