EAST MEETS WEST (article first published : 2007-08-19)

A new cultural crossover Fashion Show which had a successful run in Durban earlier this year, will be staged in Johannesburg in early December, 2007. The hugely successful East Meets West Fusion Fashion Show will be presented at the Kyalami Theatre on the Track. This young team is looking for exciting designers to showcase their work in the East Meets West fashion show.

The project is headed and produced by two KwaZulu-Natal based emerging young professionals: choreographer Shivani Kara and dancer/performer Bhavnesh Narotam. Both have worked on various shows and wanted to see a fashion show with a difference combining dance, creativity and entertainment, hence Eastern Moves Productions now presents the East Meets West Fusion Fashion Show in Gauteng.

“Eastern Moves Productions is dedicated to sharing the rich and diverse culture of Bollywood and South Africa with an audience that is truly as esoteric as the art itself,” says co-organiser, Bhavnesh Narotam. “It is committed to creating a professional platform for local artists of stature by exposing young dancers, actors, singers and models to achieve their dreams even as they aspire to attain international stardom, The Durban designers were extremely happy with the impact of the show.”

Shivani Kara explains: “East Meets West offers audiences a production of the highest quality. We have seen that it instilled a sense of cross-cultural understanding and pride; it also resulted in the creation of employment opportunities over a cross-section of the population. Our vision is for a platform for the entire fashion genre to be displayed in a unique and creative way, its fusion of Eastern, Western and African Fashion and entertainment, utilising talent from different race and cultural groups. We are very excited about staging a show of this calibre in Johannesburg”

There will be three shows at the Kyalami Theatre on the Track on December 1 (fund-raising premiere) and December 2 at 14h30 and 19h00. Tickets will be available at Computicket.

Eastern Moves Productions is calling for fashion designers who wish to use this opportunity to showcase their garments. Interested parties should contact Shivani Kara on 083 776 9222 or Bhavnesh Narotam on 072 349 6165 or e-mail easternmoves@gmail.com
