STEPHAN WELZ AUCTION (article first published : 2007-07-21)

Stephan Welz & Co, in association with Sotheby’s, one of the world’s most esteemed auctioneering companies, will be conducting an auction of fine and decorative arts, silver, jewellery and books in Johannesburg this month.

Following the success of the sale in April, this event will take place at Stephan Welz & Co/Sotheby’s Rosebank auction rooms on July 30 (from 14h00 and 19h00), July 31 (from 10h00 and 15h00) and on August 1 (from 10h00 and 15h30).

The variety of decorative arts will include carpets, rugs, clocks, militaria, textiles, ceramics, works of art, glass and tribal art. The painting section will include major works by South African early masters as well as a strong body of modern and contemporary work. Some of the highlights are major paintings by J.H. Pierneef, Maggie Laubser and Irma Stern.

“The year 2007 has been about breaking all sorts of records when it comes to South African art. It is exciting to see how popular certain works are and how much demand there is for various pieces”, says Ruarc Peffers, Head of the Art department.

The variety of jewellery includes antique, period and contemporary jewellery, unset gemstones, pocket and wristwatches. The variety of books includes reference, biographies, Africana and military.

“Antique jewellery is always popular and will do well,” says Eva Miklas, the Head of Department for jewellery and silver. “The diamonds with certificates are a good investment because of the quality of the stones. There is also a private collection of silver which is very impressive. This year should see even more excitement due to the quality of what’s on auction.”
