ANDRÉ THE HILARIOUS HYPNOTIST (article first published : 2007-07-21)

André the Hilarious Hypnotist returns to the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre at the University of KwaZulu-Natal with his High Voltage Humour show.

His dry sense of humour, hilarious stage routines and all-round 'friendly-guy' personality will have audiences in stitches of laughter from beginning to end as he gets people to participate in various side-splitting routines.

André recently spent two months visiting various countries and viewing some of the latest hypnotist shows currently on stage in cities such as Las Vegas. “Although some of the hypnotists there are incredibly skilled with the way in which they hypnotise people, some routines are terrible and degrading ... but there's always a flip side,” he says.

He did, however, manage to walk away with a number of new routines suitable for South African audiences. The favourite of these he calls 'the bunny hop' - what exactly it entails, André is not prepared to divulge at this stage - but he promises that it is extremely funny. “I have to hop like a bunny during the routine,” he explains, “and my crew took actual bets as to how long it would take before I would have enough courage to act like a rabbit on stage.”

Other new routines also include the double-counting Chinese; the Happy Birthday singer; and a David Copperfield routine which has proven to be André's single most successful routine to-date. Adding to the fun André will be filming his final performance in Durban on August 12, which will feature the best volunteers as selected by the audience during every performance. The volunteers will then feature in a one-hour programme, shot over the last five months by a television crew which has travelled from show to show.

Asked how he feels about the programme André replies: “Probably one of the best ideas yet. I meet so many people and this is one way in which I can share my experience with the audience.” There will be access to a download of this episode from his website later in the year.

The fun does not stop here as André launches a range of WEBISODES filmed across South Africa and exclusively broadcast on the Internet. These episodes will be filmed in various famous and historical places in South Africa and then streamed from his website as 30-second episodes.

André the Hilarious Hypnotist run at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from July 24 to August 12. Shows are nightly at 20h00 (Sundays at 16h00) and booking is at Computicket.
