BUSINESS DAY/BASA WINNERS (article first published : 2007-06-29)

Companies making innovative and effective use of arts sponsorship were recognized at the Tenth Annual Business Day/BASA Awards for business sponsors of the arts. As sponsor of the event, Anglo American hosted the awards on June 4 in the newly refurbished Alexander Theatre in Braamfontein, demonstrating their philosophy of sustained engagement with all facets of our society. Focusing on mutually beneficial business-arts partnerships during 2006, the awards were presented by Mrs Zanele Mbeki, following an address by Mrs Evita Bezuidenhout.

In the category Best Use of a Commission of New Art, which recognises those sponsors who have had the vision to support the creation of new, original work in any arts medium and to use the commission effectively, nominations went to Matchboxology (Pty) Limited for Le Club Ė The Opera Production Company; Rand Merchant Bank (A division of First Rand Bank Limited) for RMB Canteen Art Project; Sasol Wax (A division of Sasol Limited) for The Sasol Wax Art Award and Exhibition 2006 and The Sunday Times (A division of Johnnic Communications) for The Sunday Times Heritage Project. The award was presented to The Sunday Times (a division of Johnnic Communications) for The Sunday Times Heritage Project

Nominated in the First Time Sponsor category were Mogalakwena River Lodge for Synergy Contemporary Bead Art Exhibition; Noah Financial Innovation for Rainforest Project Room at Gordart Gallery; The South African Police Service for Motswedi Literary Competition (The Well); The Sunday Times (A division of Johnnic Communications) for The Sunday Times Heritage Project; and Vida e Caffe Holdings (Pty) Limited for Guerilla Project.

Two awards were made: Mogalakwena River Lodge for Synergy Contemporary Bead Art Exhibition and The South African Police Service for The Motswedi Literary Competition.

Increasing Access to the Arts focuses on those sponsors who have helped bring the arts to people who might not otherwise have access to them. Nominees were Beiersdorf Consumer Projects (Pty) Limited for The Nivea Gallery at The KwaZulu Natal Society of Arts (KZNSA); Edgars for Edgars Music Series at the Bassline Jazz Club; Silke Financial Services for Ikwezi Art Centre; Universal Print Group for Awesome Africa Music Festival; and Vulindlela Communications for VC Netwox Book Club. Again two Awards were made to Edgars for Edgars Music Series at the Bassline Jazz Club and Silke Financial Services for Ikwezi Art Centre.

The International Sponsorship category recognises those businesses sponsoring South African arts abroad, or bringing an international arts project into South Africa, giving our public access to work it would not normally see. The nominees were BHP Billiton for Ifa Lethu Foundation; Old Mutual Life Assurance Company SA (Pty) Limited for The Baxter Theatre production of Hamlet in South Africa and UK and Standard Bank of South Africa Limited for Picasso and Africa. The award was presented to The Standard Bank Of South Africa Limited for Picasso and Africa.

Nominations for Long Term Development - a category designed to recognise companies that have not only committed to but developed sponsorship of an arts organisation or project over three or more years - went to Deutsche Bank for Little Artists Programme; The Hollard Group for Spier Arts Trust Ė The Spier Summer Season; PPC (Pretoria Portland Cement Co. Limited) for Owl House Foundation and Smuts Cottage; and Sanlam for Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature. The award was presented to PPC (Pretoria Portland Cement) for its support of the Owl House Foundation and Smuts Cottage.

Nominations for Media Sponsorship, for consistent support given by electronic or print media to the arts went to Die Beeld (Media 24) for Aardklop National Arts Festival; Die Burger (Media 24) for Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK); and The Natal Witness Printing and Publishing Company for The Witness Hilton Arts Festival. The award was presented to Die Burger (Media 24) for Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK).

The category Single Project focuses on an outstanding sponsorship or a series of projects with one organisation, and the nominees were Barloworld Limited for Buskaid; Bell Dewar & Hall for Artist Proof Studio; Levi Strauss South Africa for Leviís Young Guns; and Mobile Telephone Networks (Pty) Limited (MTN) for Messages and Meaning Exhibition. The award was made to Levi Strauss South Africa for Leviís Young Guns

Smaller companies with 1-to-200 fulltime employees and an annual turnover of no more than R10million, who give vital support to arts projects, fall into the category Sponsorship by a Small Business. Nominees were Mogalakwena River Lodge for Synergy Contemporary Bead Art Exhibition; Nashua Maritzburg for Art in the Park; Pinpoint One Human Resources (Pty) Limited for Artist Proof Studio; and Vulindlela Communications for VC Netwox Book Club. The award was presented to Pinpoint One Human Resources (Pty) Limited for Artist Proof Studio

Nominations in the category Sponsorship in Kind, where a company gives non-financial but essential support to the arts, went to Classicfeel Magazine for Young Women Artists 2006; Deneys Reitz for pro bono legal advice to various arts projects; Fine Music Radio for supporting various arts and culture organizations with air time and promotion; and Sigodi Marah Martin (Pty) Limited for SHiFT Student Housing Design Competition. Two awards were presented to CLASSICfeel MAGAZINE for Young Women Artists 2006 and Deneys Reitz for pro bono legal advice to various arts projects.

The Strategic Sponsorship category looks at the best use of a sponsorship programme as an integral part of the sponsorís overall marketing strategy. Nominated were ABSA Bank for ABSA Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK); Old Mutual South Africa for Old Mutual Encounters; and Sanlam Limited for Sanlam SA Fashion Week. The award was presented to ABSA Bank for ABSA Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK).

One of the most popular areas for arts sponsorship is that which involves education and young people. In the category Youth Sponsorship the nominees were Cell C for Durban Music School; Levi Strauss for Leviís Young Guns; Sanlam for Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature; and Unilever South Africa (Pty) Limited for Young Performers. The award was presented to Sanlam for Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature.

The Barloworld ARTWORKS Mentor of the Year Award, launched last year, goes to business volunteers working directly with arts organisations, sharing skills and expertise to address challenges specific to that arts organisation. The mentoring relationship should demonstrate commitment and care, bringing real benefit to the mentored arts organization, and be as much an enjoyable growth and learning experience for mentor as mentored arts organization. Nominees were Gale Lemmert of Barloworld for National Childrenís Theatre Trust; Pamela Grayman of Grant Thornton for Ballet Theatre Afrikan; Amanda Roche of Nedbank for The Johannesburg Youth Orchestra; Irma Albers of Distell for from the hip:Khulumakahle; and Gary Ninow of Business clinic for The Umcebo Trust. Two awards were made: to Irma Albers and Pamela Grayman.
