MUSINGS OF A MEANDERING MIND # 35 (article first published : 2007-06-13)

May can be a wonderfully Magical Month in Durban-by-the-Sea, as the humidity has dropped off and weíre treated to glorious day-time temperatures, though the early mornings and the nights can be a tad parky, as the Brits would say!

However, there was something almost Maniacal about the swift drop in the Mercury after one of those rare Berg Wind days which brought us temperatures of 38 degrees and then, a mere 48 hours or so later, we experienced one of the coldest nights I can recall in many a year. Consequently, Iíve had to relocate the pleasure of my daily swims under the blue, blue skies to the heated waters of my gym, where it seems somewhat incongruous to be doing lengths in an air-conditioned environment! But keep up the exercise I must, for Ė horror of horrors! Ė Iíve somehow managed to allow 5kg to creep back up in a month, after ridding myself of a nice round figure of 30! So now the Menace that I have to Master is Maintenance until I can work out a Method to shed yet More!

My kindly chiropractor has loaned me Patrick Holfordís much-heralded book all about GL Ė as in Glycaemic Load - and after a read-through Iíve thankfully found a couple of new Mouthwatering Menu ideas to try to spice things up a little in the legal department. I happened to catch the sad tale of a young man on the Tyra Banks Show this very afternoon who, after shedding around 100kg, has now developed a very sad case of man boobs and a great deal of excess skin Ė so, though he LOOKS better (from the outside), itís only because he goes through the arduous effort each morning of padding his chest tightly and donning three or four tee-shirts under his outerwear Ė and now heís left with some psychological hang-ups after making this monstrous effort towards attaining better health.

I can empathise with this youngster for I, too, have found gravity taking its toll at this stage and, should I indeed manage to attain my goal weight, I may at some stage in the future also have to consider surgery Ė and Money is in short supply, so how I shall manage those kind of Medical bills I have no idea. But, letís not get ahead of ourselves, thatís what I tell myself. Just plod on and take it one day at a time for, rather like an alcoholic, I still regard myself as a Recovering Chocaholic!

Well, May also meant that we celebrated Motherís Day here on the second Sunday of this month, and I felt truly blessed that not only my daughter but two other young folk in HER life (one an orphan, the other an adopted child who had an unhappy experience after tracing her biological mother) took time out of their valuable weekend leisure time to spend a couple of hours with me over lunch in the delightful surroundings of our beautiful Mitchell Park, on a really glorious day.

I received not only the gift of their company but also some marvellous ones of a Musical nature Ė just my cup of tea, one might say. So now Iíve been able to add to my DVD collection Josh Grobanís wonderful concert Live at the Greek (where I was delighted to discover a couple of numbers not yet released on CD), as well as the new Michael Bublť (Call Me Irresponsible - a wonderfully diverse album) and also the Tony Bennett duets CD where he teams up with many well-known more contemporary singers Ė the likes of The Dixie Chicks, Elvis Costello, Billy Joel, Elton John, Paul McCartney and many others. And on this particular album (a superb production, incidentally), an unexpected pleasure is a new find, a highly talented artist who goes simply by the moniker of Juanes - and I shall be investigating HIM further very shortly after hearing him duetting in The Shadow of Your Smile most beautifully.

And, on top of all THAT pleasure, THE best piece of news Iíve read in a long while is that my MOST favourite M of all time, as in Mario (Frangoulis), has been approached to play the lead in a film about the life of that well-known passionate yet untrained singer of yesteryear, Mario Lanza. WHAT a thrill it will be for me if my Mario accepts this role. I cannot imagine anything more pleasurable than watching him on screen for the duration of an entire movie, after the very brief appearance he made in De-Lovely, the story of Cole Porterís life, and music, where Mario Frangoulis and Lara Fabian (another superb singer) did such a fine job performing the duet So in Love.

Well, SO in love am I with Mario that Iím off to bed quite shortly to listen to him in my boudoir as I drift off to dreamland Ė that is, after my Midnight Mug of cocoa (my allowable chocolate substitute Ė which is also extremely healthy, so the Medicos are now informing Mothers, as a bedtime drink for young children), taken with two per cent milk and a sweetener.

So itíll be sweet dreams, no doubt, as I enjoy his unique version of that wonderful piece from the Third Act of Tosca (E lucevan le stelle), where Mario has adapted Pucciniís music and added wonderful lyrics by Steve Wood to come up with Sometimes I Dream - the third track on his CD of the same name - and, in my opinion, the VERY best album I have EVER added to my collection!

More Musing next Month. Till then, let the music play on! - Bev Pulť
