DIONYSUS IN THE WINELANDS (article first published : 2007-06-3)

The 50th Annual Conference of the International Federation for Theatre Research (IFTR)/ Fédération internationale pour la recherche théâtrale (FIRT) is to be held at the H.B. Thom Theatre Centre and the Arts Building, University of Stellenbosch, Stellenbosch, South Africa from July 10 to 14.

The theme for this conference is Theatre in Africa - Africa in the Theatre, focusing of the relationship between Africa and its theatre, and theatre and performance in the rest of the world.

Themes to be discussed include Theatre & Identity , Interactive theatre & social change, Puppets, Masks & Masquerades, Carnival & Festival, Translation, transportation & adaptation, Intercultural performance: syncretism & hybridism, The oral tradition, Film & Media, Africa in the Theatre, National Theatres, Theatre & Gender, Theory & Research, Dance & Movement studies, History & Memory, Popular Theatre & Street theatre, Theatre, Politics & Resistance, The African Diaspora and Rites, Rituals & Theatre.

Almost 300 African and international scholars and practitioners from more than 30 countries will gather for the occasion and keynote addresses will be delivered by three prominent academics and authors: Femi Osifisan (Ibadan University, Nigeria), Jane Taylor (University of the Witwatersrand) and John Conteh-Morgan (Ohio State University, USA). Other prominent participants among the more than 150 speakers are Gbemisola Adeoti (Nigeria), Jon Andreasen (Denmark), Christopher Balme (Germany), Marvin Carlson (USA), Sylvie Chalaye (France), Ravi Chaturvedi (India), Catherine M. Cole (USA), Jim Davis (UK), Jacques Raymond Fofie (Cameroon), James Gibbs (UK), Yvette Hutchison (UK), El Mninai Hassan (Marocco), Christopher Innes (Canada), Jessica A. Kaahwa (Uganda), Baz Kershaw (UK), E. Kezilahabi (Botswana), Dariusz Kosiÿski (Poland), Dele Layiwola (Nigeria), Shulameth Lev Aladgem (Israel), Daniel Meyer-Dinkgräfe (UK), Miranda Shu-lan Ni (Taiwan), Frowin Paul Nyoni (Ethiopia), Sophie Proust (France), Janelle Reinelt (USA/UK), Don Rubin (Canada), Willmar Sauter (Sweden), Jung-Soon Shim (Korea), Joanne Tompkins (Australia), David Whitton (UK), David Wiles (UK), Farah Yeganeh (Iran) and Shams Eldin Younis (Egypt).

South Africa based participants include Keith Bain, Veronica Baxter, Kennedy Chinyowa, Marie-Heleen Coetzee, J.L. Coetzer, Mark Fleishman, Liz Gunner, Anton Krueger, Marie Kruger, Tamar Meskin, Gay Morris, Bogosi-Kingdom Moshounyane, Alan Munro, Marth Munro, Samantha Pienaar and Sabata Sesiu.

In addition to the main conference, the IFTR also runs the Kay McDonnell New Scholars Forum, in which more than 50 new scholars from all over the world will participate, and 19 Working Groups that gather to work on research projects focused on specific topics. Delegates are welcome to join these groups as participants or observers. Theatre productions, special tours and social events are also part of the programme.

The conference is hosted by the Centre for Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Stellenbosch under the auspices of FIRT/IFTR and in association with the US Department of Drama, the South African Theatre Journal and Unistel Consultus.
