THE ART OF STAMPS (article first published : 2007-04-28)

The ubiquitous postage stamp was a participant at this year’s Design Indaba held in Cape Town in February.

“The Post Office’s believes that stamp design should be seen as an art form and to ensure this, we are looking to recruit more artists as stamp designers,” say Johan Van Wyk of the South African Post Office Philatelic Services.

The ‘alternative’ side to stamps is that they can and have been used in the fashion and interior design mediums. Some fashion items designed by students from the fashion design department of the Tshwane University of Technology as well as colour prints of some outstanding stamp designs were exhibited at the Design Indaba.

The design of a postage stamp plays a very important role as postage stamps are often referred to as the ‘smallest ambassadors’ of a country. “The Post Office believes that the theme must portray a positive image of South Africa and the design elements, printing, paper and glue selection must be of the highest quality,” continues Johan Van Wyk.

There is currently a pool of 15 artists that the Post Office commissions to design stamps on an ad hoc basis and is continually searching for new talent. Students from the graphic design departments at the University of the North West in Potchefstroom, the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and the Open Window School of Visual Communication in Pretoria have designed some commemorative stamps over the past few years.
