MUSEOLOGY MADE EASY (article first published : 2006-12-18)

A series of four-day workshops will be conducted in 2007 on Museology Made Easy as part of the SAMA Transformation Training Programme. This programme is funded by the Department of Arts and Culture.

Facilitator Carol Brown will conduct the KZN component which will take place in Mooi River from January 23 to 26.

The course curriculum will include an introduction to the history of museums and their functions as well as current legislation pertaining to museums, museum ethics, collections management and collections policies. The workshop will also focus on documentation, preventive conservation, research and interpretation, exhibitions, education, public programmes, services and access.

The workshop, including a light lunch, is sponsored by the SAMA Transformation Training Programme, funded by the Department of Arts and Culture. Delegates are responsible for their own transport, accommodation and additional meals. Maximum number of participants is 30.

The workshop is aimed at museum managers, site managers or curators of smaller museums as well as researchers, curators and educators new to, or wishing to enter the museum environment. It will also be of benefit to any other personnel who handle collections or who are involved in interpreting collections to the public. Museum professionals who wish to refresh their knowledge within the broader context of the transformation of South African society will also find the workshop valuable.

The Museology Made Easy workshop aims to convey the broad concept of museology within the context of transformation of South African society, the range of knowledge it encompasses and to teach the basic skills needed to practice it as a discipline.

Desired learning outcomes are to teach the foundation competencies required to care for museum collections; and how to use those collections in exhibitions and educational and public programmes.

Deadline for applications is January 2, 2007, and interested candidates must complete the SAMA application form available from the SAMA National Office on 046 624 3087; e-mail: ttp@futurserve.co.za or at http://www.samaweb.org.za
