LET DURBAN LAUGH (article first published : 2006-12-4)

Ethekwini Municipality will present a highly entertaining and exceptional line-up of stand up comedians in a comedy festival, which takes place over two weekends in December. The festival kicks off with 100% Zulu Stand-up Comedy show (see separate article) followed by Let Durban Laugh.

“An extremely high profile line-up for both shows is the first of its kind in the country,” says festival organiser Monwabisi Grootboom, of the Performing Arts and Living Cultures Development department of Ethekwini Municipality. “As part of Ethekwini Municipality’s oral traditions programme, which seeks to provide regular stages for our local artists, the city recognizes stand-up comedy as one of alternative forms of art for employment and job creation. The comedy Festival will see well executed shows that will run parallel to its sister show, Amahlaya eTheku held at the Bat Centre recently.”

Let Durban Laughis an annual event that has formed part of Durban’s hottest festive season entertainment over the past two years and attracts audiences from all over the country.

The show feature internationally acclaimed and South Africa’s celebrated performers and comedians. Appearing on December 8 will be Carvin Goldstone, Sfiso Nene, Loyiso Gola, Joey Rasdien , Kaseran Pillay , Conrad Koch and Mark Banks. The line-up for December 9 includes Yugan Naidoo, Tsepo Mogale , Afzal Khan , Eddie Eckstein , Vivian Moodley , Chris Forrest and Kagiso Lediga

Whilst the comedy festival include a lot of established artist and comedians in the industry, it will mainly feature artists who went through an ongoing auditioning process at various areas across the City’s townships.

Let Durban Laugh will take place in the Durban City Hall on December 8 and 9 at 19h30.
