RED EYE: TRANSFORM! (article first published : 2006-08-26)

Red Eye: Transform! is taking place on September 29 as part of the Celebrate Durban initiative. Red Eye will kick off in the Durban Art Gallery from 18h00 to 20h00 and then move into Smith Street until – as the organisers say: “we are asked to leave!”

Red Eye invites all visual artists, designers, video artists, performers, installation artists and any other creative persons to attend an artists briefing on August 28 at 17h30 at the Durban Art Gallery, 2nd Floor, Smith Street, Durban.

Proposals are invited for works inside the gallery and there is an exciting opportunity for large scale works to be created for exhibition in Smith Street.

The theme will be Transform! which is intended to be a different take on all the talk of transformation around the country. What does it mean to transform? Artists will be coming up with some comments on the theme and the city centre itself will become part of the process.

“The gallery spaces will be changed from their usual function to create surprising environments which will make us look again at the spaces and places around us,” says DAG director Carol Brown. “Expect to see contemporary dance, sound and light installations, a changed Smith Street and new and exciting fashion. You may even find some visual art around. Red Eye is now happening less frequently so this is the last of the year - come along and join in the fun.”
