RESIDENT ARTISTS PROGRAMME (article first published : 1999-11-23)

The BAT Centre Trust in Durban is currently canvassing for emerging artists to take part in the newly established Artists in Action Residency Programme. Starting from early 2000, a set number of musicians, visual artists, dance and drama practitioners and others will be selected to work exclusively at the Centre, utilising the space, equipment and infrastructure.

The Resident Artists will spend six months to a year at the Centre, where they will not only use the rehearsal and workshop spaces, but also the performance venues and galleries. In this way, for instance, a band could rehearse regularly and get professional advice and support from established musicians and teachers. They will be afforded regular performance slots to test their material in front of a live audience. They will also receive advice and support about business aspects such as contracts, negotiations, pricing, etc.

The Durban Metro Council will be supporting this project financially and the aim is to establish small, medium and micro business enterprises, satisfying the BAT Centrešs aim of creating jobs for artists. Bands, musicians, visual artists (painting, ceramics, sculpture, printing etc), dance and drama groups, as well as other interested parties, must submit a detailed CV with photograph to the BAT Centre before November 30. This must be accompanied by a portfolio or demo, on the basis of which participants will be shortlisted. A final audition and/or interview will be conducted soon afterwards. For further information or assistance, contact the Director of the Centre Hendrik Baird on (031) 332-0451.
