IN MEMORIAM (article first published : 1999-11-22)

South Africa’s theatre world mourns the passing of Percy Baneshik, one of the country’s finest arts journalists and reviewers and founding Arts Editor of the Star Tonight. Despite a physical disability caused by polio, he was a staunch supporter of live theatre and his small, distinctive frame was always a reassuring – albeit unnerving - sight as seen from the stage, knowing that the performance would be assessed by a reviewer of integrity and perception. In a letter to artzone (http://www.artzone.co.za) theatre producer Des Lindberg as chairman of Theatre Managements of South Africa, described Percy Baneshik as “an institution, a guru, a mentor and a leader.”
