ECR HOUSE & GARDEN SHOW (article first published : 2006-06-11)

The latest home and lifestyle products and trends will be under the spotlight at the 2006 East Coast Radio House & Garden Show, a must-see ten-day home and lifestyle shopping event that runs at the Durban Exhibition Centre from June 30 to July 9.

Re-invent :-) is this year’s theme. Hundreds of exhibitors will showcase the latest products and expertise that inspire and excite the consumer. Re-invent :-) is about combining elements of old and new; contemporary and traditional; natural and hi-tech; retro and futuristic. It is the contrast of design concepts at play with the imagination. It’s a different look at the world and a chance to re-invent our homes and living spaces.

A host of new and exciting features are lined up for the show, which continues to attract over 100,000 show-goers each year. East Coast Radio will again bring its distinct brand of humour, buzz and excitement to the show and the station’s popular DJ personalities Damon & Mags will present their Rush Hour Ride Show every day live from the Show from 15h00 to 18h00.

Christies International will be showing Affordable Opulence, presenting an eclectic, modern approach to interior design by mixing old and new, complementing the retro trend that is bringing yesteryear into today’s living spaces.

Two Christies experts from London - toy specialist Hugo Marsh and porcelain specialist Louise Phelps - will offer free valuations of old toys and porcelain heirlooms. So scour that junk room: you may find yourself to be the owner of a hidden treasure. Cargo Homestore will feature a fine collection of antique furniture sourced from Europe plus an emporium, offering smaller lifestyle gifts with their own unique appeal.

Kizo Art Gallery in Gateway will launch the work of Cape Town architect and artist Philip Briel, whose abstract media canvases are inspired by a fierce sense of place. Contemporary artists in situ will create art awareness and offer originals that lend inspiration to the walls of your home and so enhance décor.

Chefs On Stage from the Royal Hotel will call on show-goers to have “Fun with Food” as they get interactive with members of the public, highlighting the pleasure of fine feasting. Not only will you have the chance to sample delicious food, you’ll also be able to join the chefs in the preparation, and stand the chance to win some super prizes.

Sam Boylan of Re-Store, an eclectic gallery in Overport, will bring his particular brand of art, furniture and décor to the show. Boylan specialises in revamping old furniture in the hugely popular retro style, and his colourful stand will include fun, funky and fashionable fabrics and wallpapers in stripes, dots, florals and damasque.

Bean Bag Bohemia, another regular show favourite, are also working with the retro theme and their presence promises to be even bigger and better this year. They are including a tea and coffee bar, and owner Guy Wood will be jetting off to Tokyo to bring back the very latest Japanese food trends for a Sushi Bar to be launched at the show.

The ever-popular Ethekwini Parks Department will present their showstopping theme statement as they ‘re-invent’ the display of plants. Their magnificent theme interpretations are always a highlight of the show, and this year will be no exception. Our natural plant world will also be the focus of the Botanical Artists Association, as they present fine art, featuring the beauty of garden and outdoor flora.

Nourish of 191 Musgrave Road, will present a new garden restaurant at the show, offering their menu of simple, fresh and delicious foods served in a lush and leafy garden environment.

The show will also feature a Big Screen TV on the East Park Grass, which will give live broadcasts of the Vodacom Durban July and other major sports events. At other times, music videos, property highlights and music DVDs will keep the crowds entertained.

“This year is about new ideas and getting creative, plus doing loads of good shopping,” says show director Diana Chandler of Kagiso Exhibitions. “With lots of Show Specials on offer, there will be something to purchase for everyone, along with bags of fun for shoppers of all ages.”

"The East Coast Radio House & Garden Show is a signature event for the station and a highlight on the KZN Show calendar. But East Coast Radio is more than the naming rights sponsor, we actively get involved with the Organisers in the branding and marketing of this event, which has seen attendances increase year after year. Visitors can expect lots of DJ involvement this year, exciting competitions and the type of entertainment that makes the station Durban's No 1," says Trish Taylor, CEO of East Coast Radio.

Parents can rest easy, knowing there is lots of entertainment to keep the young ones busy too. There will be appearances by popular cartoon characters, Spongebob Squarepants, Goku from Dragon Ball Z and The Powder Puff Girls to keep the kids entertained. They will also be delighted with the toys and games available at TREE’s Kid’s Corner. TREE (Training & Resources in Early Education) is an NGO which provides invaluable assistance to disadvantaged communities. Part of this work is achieved through the sale of self-teaching aids and toys. Many of these toys are created from recycled materials and paper machè. Show-goers can support this worthy cause by visiting the stand. TREE is generously sponsored and supported by LexisNexis Butterworths. Tickets R38 (R22 students, scholars and senior citizens) and entrance for children under 12 years is free.
