NORTHLANDS IDOLS (article first published : 2006-05-13)

Some 18 finalists have been selected by well-known Durban performer and Northlands Old Girl, Shelley McLean to participate in the Northlands Girls' High School Idols competition on May 18.

All the girls were invited to audition for the event and the finalists were selected for the two categories, junior idols (Grades 8 and 9) and senior idols (Grades 10 to 12).

Shelley McLean is organising this fun event and will be MC on the evening with judging by Evan Roberts, John Stengel, Angela Dodds and Marion Loudon.

"The competition has been arranged so that the girls have something fun to get involved in," says teacher Deidre Pieterse. "It will also be a showcase for the talent at Northlands. The girls deserve this as they achieved good examination results last year and so we would like them to have fun."

Shelley McLean said that each girl will sign a song of their choice to a backing track and there will be guest performances by two other girls. Judges will be looking at the musicality of each entrant along with their performance level, stage presence and the "X" factor.

The winner in the junior and senior sections will win an assortment of prizes including a hair iron, beauty and hair care products as well as enjoy lunch with Steve Peralta of Project Fame and current star of Grease, which is showing at the Barnyard. Members of the audience will also stand a chance of winning prizes.

The competition will take place on May 18 at 18h30 for 19h00 at the NGHS hall, at the school. It is open to the public, Tickets R30 pp. More information from Deidre Pieterse on 031 571 1100 or Shirley Williams on 031 564 7700.
