ICC ARENA (article first published : 2006-04-21)

The recent roof wetting of the ICC Arena – an extension to the International Convention Centre Durban complex - is an important milestone taking Durban one step closer towards having a world class multi-purpose indoor stadium that will help put Durban back on the map for international concerts and sporting events.

The R460 million ICC Arena will also provide the city with increased conference and exhibition facilities. Acoustically, the Arena will be highly sophisticated, with R27 million spent on superb quality acoustic walls that will be used to divide spaces in a variety of configurations to ensure maximum flexibility.

The actual ICC Arena area will cover 2,500 square metres with raked seating for 6,000 and space for 10,000 spectators. The 60-metre roof – which the architects boast could support 100 elephants! - offers much-needed security for world class international performers who, in the past, have often been faced with concerts that are rained out

Gone are the days, hopefully, when Durban contemporary music lovers are left out in the cold when major touring shows only include Johannesburg and Cape Town.

An open area outside the area, called the Africa Square, has been likened to Trafalgar Square in London and can accommodate 20,000 visitors.

Construction of the complex will go on hold during May as the ICC hosts the much-valued Tourism Indaba. Then it’s back on track for the official opening in March 2007 – which appropriately is the ICC’s 10th birthday. An ice show and a rock concert are on the cards following the opening.

The ICC has been voted Africa’s Leading Conference Centre for five consecutive years and one of the top 10 centres in the world.
