SIZWE TO LA (article first published : 1999-11-18)

Earlier this year Ningizimu School for the Severely Mentally Handicapped became the first LSEN (Learners with Special Education Needs School) to enter an international website design competition called ThinkQuest. “We were welcomed by our international partners Jason and Janine Yeo who are two school students who live in Singapore,“ says Ningizimu art teacher Robin Opperman. “They allowed us to prepare artwork for their website and for one of our students, Sizwe Ngcobo, to become an official team member. Sizwe battled with some of the work, but with their support we finally got it right. We are so proud of Sizwe because as far as we know, he is the first Special Needs Student to participate in the ThinkQuest web page design competition.” (Check out the site on http://library.advanced.org/27629)

The website designed by Sizwe and his Singapore partners has reached the ThinkQuest international finals and he leaves Durban this evening at 18h00 with his art teacher Robin Opperman to attend the Conference in Los Angeles. This is bound to be the experience of his short lifetime. Sizwe has a 21-hour flight ahead of him which will take him via Johannesburg and New York to Los Angeles. Once there, he will be settled into the Hilton at Universal Studios, a far cry from the humble home he shares with his grandmother. Sizwe is a film fanatic and claims that Titanic is his favourite movie. So, it is fitting that he should go to Hollywood, home of the stars. Perhaps he might even catch sight of Leonardo di Caprio or Kate Winslet!

Sizwe and Robin will return to Durban on November 25 (arriving at 11h10). Take a look at Ningizimu’s website on http://users.iafrica.com/a/a4/a4exhib/
