MUSINGS OF A MEANDERING MIND #9 (article first published : 2006-02-19)

Started my day with a really good chuckle down at the local pool when one of the Sunday swimmers made her early-morning appearance to do a spot of training. Weve conversed in desultory fashion on the odd occasion but - since I chirp away to several folk of all ages, sizes and sexes - I couldnt recall whether shed said she was in Finance or in Travel.

Turned out it was the former but that the job does, in fact, entail a little of the latter. She also mentioned that occasionally she takes the plunge before office duties call on weekdays, as well as on Sundays, resulting in my enquiring where her employer is located. When she named the street but a hop and a skip from the pool - I said Id been told that, in that road, there was an antique store that doubled as a coffee-and-cake venue that had been highly recommended to me recently by a Swiss chef Id chatted to in the water. And then, since Im a back sufferer, immediately enquired if she knew anything about the seating there, since chairs with no back support mean THAT particular establishment will not be getting MY business, no matter HOW good the fare.

I was amused at her description of the clientele currently supporting this latest in spot which is located in a pleasant suburb of our fine city a slightly more youthful version of the Ladies who Lunch type of blue-rinse brigade, by the sounds of it - as it conjured up in my mind a vivid mental image of extremely well-groomed socialites of the female persuasion arriving in their BMWs and 4x4 vehicles - the kind, as she put it, who would all be moving on just as soon as the NEXT in place had established a reputation as THE place to be seen around town.

What makes the story even funnier is that, adjacent to said establishment, it appears someone is running a brothel, and she related how she and some of her workmates occasionally, during the course of the day, pop out onto the verandah of their office for a smoke break (since puffing away indoors is very much no-can-do in public places now, and employers enforce this ruling strictly), and frequently get quizzical looks from the brothels clientele as they drive up and down this short road looking for the correct address!

But what caused my giggles to turn into guffaws about all these comings and goings was when she informed me that, as part of her duties, she often has to summon a taxi to take her to the address of a fairly far-flung client in the city, resulting in even further confusion as brothel-creepers drive by and observe this really RESPECTABLE-looking lady being delivered home in an expensive taxicab! One customer, whod travelled all the way from Gauteng, judging from the number-plates on his car, had REALLY experienced one of those Was my face red! moments when hed pitched up at the financial premises when what he was seeking was the brothel. Dont think hed intended to be fleeced to THAT extent!!

But chuckles turned into real belly-laughs from both of us when she THEN informed me that, next-door to the brothel, what she and her colleagues at first took to be a casino had opened up, causing even further confusion in the thrills-for-money stakes. This caused me to quip in light-hearted fashion that, should they hit the jackpot, theyre really getting TWO chances to score! However, it turns out its not a casino but simply a firm supplying slot-machines to all the casinos that ARE springing up here, there and everywhere in The New South Africa.

As I asked further questions to be certain the place Id done a quick drive-by to try to locate was indeed this delightful sounding coffee venue the Swiss chef had suggested I try next time I wanted to take a friend out for a treat, she mentioned that theres a reputable spectacle shop just around the corner, to help me pinpoint the EXACT area, which caused me to comment that this could result in the clientele having an even KEENER insight into this anomaly!

Well, she towelled off and took her departure at that point, with a busy day ahead of her, whilst I remained seated in the shade, about to open my library book, when yet another acquaintance arrived and the conversation turned to how the residents of the city of Durban had been so horribly inconvenienced by all the road closures occasioned by the staging of the A1 international motor-racing earlier this month, when all those Grand Pricks types had invaded the beachfront area to rev their engines so crazily and noisily for a couple of days.

There were unbelievable traffic jams as workers had to find new and longer routes to work for several irritating days, and community radio stations had to provide additional traffic bulletins to assist commuters to cope. It has to be said, it was fairly exciting to know our city was being featured on television sets around the world, with the race getting worldwide exposure, and one has to hope the economy has indeed scored from this 21st Century madness. But Im still left wondering though racy folk will probably shoot me down in flames whether it truly was worth all the fuss and bother! It never ceases to amaze me how some people will spend so extravagantly for a cheap thrill! Bev Pul
