DRAMATIC LEARNING SPACES (article first published : 2006-02-19)

The Drama and Performance Studies of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, will host the Dramatic Learning Spaces Conference in September.

Proposals for papers, posters and workshops are invited under the theme African Performance Practice Research in Action. The subject matter should look at such categories as Practice as Research; Africa and Performance; Performing Arts in Education and Development, and Identity and Culture. However, these are general themes and under these categories fall a host of other possibilities.

There will be opportunities in the programme for delegates to join a Research Working group in discussion. These working groups will be structured around the themes of the conference. Applicants wishing to join or lead a working group should indicate this on their proposal form.

Attendance cost is R550 (R350 full time students). All delegates will be required to pay up front at registration and claim from their respective institutions after the event.

Proposals should reach the conference organisers by post or email by March 27, 2006. Proposals or abstracts should be 200-300 words, sent electronically in Word format as an attachment to Conference Convenor, Dramatic Learning Spaces, Drama and Performance Studies, University of KwaZulu-Natal, P/B XO1, Scottsville, 3209. The email address is dramaticlearning@ukzn.ac.za

In order to encourage student research submissions and participation in the conference, a competition will take place for the best debut paper after it has been presented at the conference. The debut papers will undergo review and the winning paper will be published in the conference publication. Only officially registered students may enter, and these students must be in their fourth year or above of study. The prize money of R1,500 will be awarded to the writer of the best research article (after presentation at the conference), selected by the reviewers of the conference publication. Submissions should be in English.

The conference will take place from September 22 to 25 at the Drama and Performance Studies of the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg. More information from convenors Veronica Baxter and Louise Buchler on 033 260 5280 or fax 033 260 5552.
