THE BAT CAFÉ (article first published : 1999-11-4)

The BAT Centre Trust is undergoing reconstruction, aligning it towards its quest for self sufficiency. After the demise of the Zansi restaurant some three months ago, there has been a search for a new tenant. “It was hard to find the right person,” explains BAT Centre manager, Hennie Baird, ”because we wanted to keep the African feel but at the same time increase the quality and service ten fold.”

The new tenant is the same company that runs Legends, Don Quays cc, and Pete Collins (Gringo's Cantina) will be in charge of the operation. Under its new name of the BAT Café, the venue will build on its strong performance tradition to offer the best in local music, catering to a variety of tastes from rock to jazz complimented by good food and fast and friendly service. Improvements are also being made to the deck area which will become part of the operation. For details call the BAT Centre on (031) 332-0451 or visit the web site on www.batcentre.co.za
