SUNDAY TIMES SU DOKU (article first published : 2005-12-29)

Now that we are all in holiday mode, with time on our hands and little to occupy our brains, this is the ideal opportunity to join in the latest craze that is seemingly taking the world by storm.

Su Doku puzzles have been a bit of a mystery to most of us up to now. However, the Sunday Times Su Dokubook contains over 100 puzzles with five levels of difficulty – ranging from easy “warm ups” to “su doku suicide” – as well as the solutions, tips and tricks to help you on your way.

One of these tricks is the numbered grids under the missing number to make your life easier and meet the mental challenges. One small criticism here is that these figures are minute but one could enlarge the Su Doku worksheet found at the back of the book to ease the eyestrain!

The compiler of the Standard Times Su Doku is Simon Lewis, writer, designer and publisher, who has been an avid puzzler for 25 years. He has worked on a wide range of sports magazines and travel books and has written two novels.

Simon Lewis states that anyone of any age or academic ability can attempt these puzzles. I can vouch for this as I normally steer clear of anything involving figures but I have managed quite a few of the puzzles – good for logical thinking. My mother in law of 87 is now also trying her hand at it. Su doku appeals to people from different cultures and languages.

Here is a good way to spend those Christmas gift voucher presents.

Sunday Times Su Doku is published by Struik and sells for the very reasonable price of R49,95. ISBN: 1 77007 335 3 – Cherry MacIldowie
