MUSINGS OF A MEANDERING MIND #3 (article first published : 2005-11-30)

I was recently listening to a marvelous singer-songwriterís piece Poems, Prayers and Promises, and got to wondering why on earth no-one has ever come up with the idea of writing a film script for the story of his life. After all, can you just imagine how magnificent that soundtrack would be? Itís only one of many, many superb pieces on The Best of John Denver so if you like his kind of music, itís a must for your collection. Enna-hoo (anyhow) this superb song gave me the idea for this particular piece, divided into three sections.

POEMS: At Christmas time this past year I came up with a Ďpoemí in praise of my extremely devoted daughter which I titled O Exemplary One (Ďcause she really is quite exemplary) and it came out as two pages of rhyming couplets, as this seems to be my own personal style when I attempt any writing of this kind. A couple of years ago I churned out ten pages which I called Ode To The [Noble] English Service in which I devoted four lines to each of many of the fine broadcasters Iíd had contact with over 27 wonderful years. But for now, Iíll quote just one paragraph of the piece I wrote about my daughter since it encapsulates the remainder of my theme Ö

My friends inform me, on every quarter,/That Iíve raised a truly outstanding daughter,/And I canít say I write this without some prejudice/But there can be no dispute youíre a truly remarkable miss.

Came my birthday two weeks later and this is what I received in response: Come away with me Mother Divine/Iíll carry you on my wings of light/To a place you have forgotten./It is the Kingdom of my Heart. Let the sweet air of my love surround you/And lift your soul to meet mine./My embrace for you is tender -/Do you not remember that we are but one? Enter my heart and dive into a place where only Grace and Beauty like yours reside./Gentleness is the greatest power for it is the unconditional state of love./So dance with me, my love, in the cool turquoise waters of my heartís depths/And lift your eyes to meet mine in the sunís warming rays.

Mother, you and I are mirrors Ė two halves of the same soul./Can you not feel my heart in yours?/Dearest twin, do you know that, as your hand touches mine,/Love is born yet again? My shoulders are strong and together we fly./Prepare yourself for a lifting of your soul to a place of indescribable joy./You are my gift, my lifeís true meaning, so come away with me, divine mother,/And dance forever in our very own circle of light.

How she knew I was in a deep depression at that time (due to ill health) I shall never know - but that poem, residing in the stunningly beautiful decoupage box sheíd spent days if not weeks making for me (in shades of green, of course), lifts my spirits and brings me back onto an even keel anytime Iím feeling low. Happily, that depression (about which I was in denial for a long while) is now over, and I just love this little line which was quoted to me by a good friend over tea just the other day ÖDe Nile isnít only a River in Egypt!!

PRAYERS: During my difficult six months of not feeling well earlier this year, kind friends and relatives would occasionally include a little prayer in their letters to me, and some that resonated with me and really helped were these Ö

I asked the Lord to bless you as I prayed for you today,/To guide you and protect you as you go along your way./His love is always with you, His promises are true,/And when we give him all our cares you know Heíll see us through./So when the road youíre traveling on seems difficult at best/Just remember Iím here praying and God will do the rest.

Stand by my side, Lord, stand by my side./Iím weary and oh how Iíve tried./My world is in tatters, it seems dark as night./Dear Lord, I beseech you, please make things come right./ My child, do not doubt me, I now hear you say./I will stand by your side and show you the way./The clouds of despair will vanish in time/And the sun will break through because you are mine. Iíll surround you with love/As you face life anew./So look up with faith because/I will never leave you.

And the following short verse is so simple to memorise, and VERY meaningful: In the sweet, calm silence/Let my spirit hear, receive,/And be rightly guided.

PROMISES : From the day I took control of my weight problem earlier this year (and consequently am now feeling so much better having lost 20kg) I made this promise to my very health-conscious daughter: If and when she meets the man whoís right for her (and, wow, in my view heíll have to be close to perfect!) any grandchildren I may be blessed with shall not be Ďspoiledí by me with treats such as chocolates, sweets, sugary ice-creams, fizzy drinks, etc. Instead, they will be presented with a perfect rosy red apple or a delicious tall cool glass of mango juice and so forth. When we are young we donít always realize how important it is to live healthily in order to be able to enjoy the Golden Years when one gets older. Now Iíve learned that particular lesson I will do my best to pass on that wisdom to any offspring I may have the blessing of spending family time with.

And on that note, once more I wish you health, as itís so much more important than wealth. Cheerio for now, then. Bev Pulť
