DURBAN THEATRE AWARDS NOMINATIONS (article first published : 2005-11-10)

The nominations for the Durban Theatre Awards have been announced. The best theatrical talent of the region during the past year will be acknowledged for their excellence in a glamorous gala showcase evening featuring excerpts from the festive season productions. The judging period has covered productions over the past year in a variety of genres.

Nominations for Poster Design are The Garden of Earthly Design (Crazy for Loving You and Nunsense); The Company (Frank&Stein); Oded Rouche (Cinderella), Greg King & Gary McKenzie (Aladdin Trouble) and The Hardy Boys (California Dreaming).

Nominations for Sound Design are Caveman Studios (Black Mamba); Richard Walne (Boston Marriage); Janet Walsh (Cinderella); Evan Roberts (Life is a Cabaret); Izan Greyling (A Twist of Broadway) and Jackie Cunniffe & Megan Levy (Nunsense). Lighting Design nominees are Michael Broderick (Cinderella; California Dreaming, Nunsense and A Twist of Broadway); Cameron Brereton-Styles & Bryan Hiles (Boston Marriage); Tina le Roux (One for the Road) and Peter Court (Aladdin Trouble).

Costume Design nominations go to The Company (Crimes of the Heart); Garth Anderson (The All New Summer Holidays Adventures of Brer Rabbit and Friends); Peter Court (Life is a Cabaret); Kit Reading (Aladdin Trouble) and Donna da Costa (California Dreaming). There is only one nominee for Set Design and that is Greg King (Art; Boston Marriage; Crimes of the Heart; Cinderella and Nunsense).

Nominations for New Performer – Female are Lulu Davies (La Coco Roche); Shika Budhoo (Macbeth); Nonpumelelo Zondi (A Twist of Broadway). Nominations for New Performer – Male are Sthembuso Mbatha (Macbeth); Jacobus van Heerden (Neon Anthems); Liam Magner Neon Anthems); Marc Kay (Aladdin Trouble) and Zwelakhe Masinga (Waiting).

In the section for Children’s Theatre, Performer Female nominees are Josette Eales (The Adventures of Jabulani Jo); Janna Ramos-Violante (The Adventures of Jabulani Jo); Belinda Henwood (Cinderella) and Clare Cassidy (Cinderella). Performer Male nominees are Oded Rouche (The All New Summer Holidays Adventures of Brer Rabbit and Friends); Thomie Holtzhausen (Cinderella); Bryan Hiles (Cinderella); Darren King (Cinderella), and Aldo Brincat (Moron Than Off).

Nominees for Children’s Theatre – Director are Josette Eales, Janna Ramos-Violante and Themi Venturas (The Adventures of Jabulani Jo); Steven Stead (Cinderella); Garth Anderson (Long, long ago… Hans Christian Andersen in Africa!) and Gabriel Sithole (Moron Than Off). Shows up for the Children’s Theatre Production award are The Adventures of Jabulani Jo from Themi Venturas Productions & Fett Diva Productions); The All New Summer Holidays Adventures of Brer Rabbit & Friends from The Actors Co-operative, Cinderella from KickstArt; Long, long ago… Hans Christian Andersen in Africa! from The Actors Co-operative and Moron Than Off from Brincat Productions in association with Themi Venturas Productions.

In the section for Musical Theatre/Music Revue, Supporting Actress nominations go to Marion Louden (California Dreaming) and Nothando Ngubane (California Dreaming) while nominations for Supporting Actor go to Hamish Kyd (Bums & Roses); Rowan Bartlett (Aladdin Trouble); Cobus Vos (California Dreaming) and Sipho Kunene (Waiting). Nunsense has scooped the nominations for Lead Actress in a Musical Theatre/Music Revue with Amra-Faye Wright, Nothando Ngubane, Shelley McLean and Carol Trench up for the award. Carol Trench is also nominated for Life is a Cabaret. Up for the Lead Actor award in Musical Theatre/Music Revue are Arnie Field (Bums & Roses); Anthony Stonier (Life is a Cabaret and Aladdin Trouble); David Dennis (A Twist of Broadway); Clive Gumede (A Twist of Broadway); Peter Court (Aladdin Trouble) and Ricky MacGregor (California Dreaming).

Still in the Musical Theatre/Music Revue section, nominees for the choreography award are Steven Stead (Cinderella); Janet Hare (Life is a Cabaret); David Gouldie & Quinton Ribbonaar (A Twist of Broadway) and David Gouldie (California Dreaming and Nunsense). Nominated for Musical Director are Evan Roberts (Life is a Cabaret and Nunsense); Burton Naidoo & Karen Van Pletsen (A Twist of Broadway); Dawn Selby (California Dreaming) and Vukani Dlamini (Waiting). Nominees for the Director award are Clare Mortimer (Life is a Cabaret); David Gouldie (A Twist of Broadway and California Dreaming); Peter Court (Aladdin Trouble) and Fiona Ramsay (Nunsense).

Nominated for Music Revue of the year are Bums & Roses from Themi Venturas Productions; Life is a Cabaret from Sue Clarence Promotions; Love Actually from Sue Clarence Promotions and A Twist of Broadway from Gary McKenzie and Karen Van Pletsen. The Musical Theatre of the year nominees are Aladdin Trouble from EMCEE Productions – Gary McKenzie & Sue Clarence; California Dreaming from Ricky MacGregor; Nunsense from Very Very Big Productions and Waiting from Stable Theatre.

Moving to the Drama and Comedy Section, nominees for New South African Script are John van de Ruit, Ben Voss, Grieg Coetzee (Black Mamba); Aldo Brincat (Blacks Like Me); Jacobus van Heerden & Liam Magner (Neon Anthems); Josette Eales & Janna Ramos-Violante (The Adventures of Jabulani Jo); Ashwin Singh (To House) and Ricky MacGregor & Aaron McIlroy (California Dreaming).

Special awards exist for Performance in a Comedy. Up for the Female award are Belinda Henwood (Boston Marriage); Clare Mortimer (Boston Marriage; Crimes of the Heart); Janna Ramos-Violante (Boston Marriage); Olivia Borgen (Crimes of the Heart) and Carol Trench (Crimes of the Heart). Up for the Male award are Michael Gritten (Art); Darren King (Art and Cinderella); Themi Venturas (Art); Ben Voss (Black Mamba and Frank&Stein); Anthony Stonier (Frank&Stein) and John van de Ruit (Frank&Stein) and Thomie Holtzhausen (Cinderella).

Nominees for Supporting Actress are Janna Ramos-Violante (Boston Marriage); Carol Trench (Crimes of the Heart); Patti Nokwe (Have you seen Zandile) and Busisiwe Mgabhi (One for the Road). Nominees for Supporting Actor are Michael Gritten (Crimes of the Heart); Bryan Hiles ( Crimes of the Heart); Garth Anderson (Macbeth); Simphiwe Junior Ngidi (One for the Road) and Koobeshen Naidoo (To House).

The nominations for Lead Actress are Clare Mortimer (Boston Marriage and Crimes of the Heart); Belinda Henwood (Boston Marriage); Liesl Coppin (Crimes of the Heart); Olivia Borgen (Crimes of the Heart) and Welile Tembe (Have you seen Zandile?). Nominations for Lead Actor are Michael Gritten (Art); Darren King (Art); Themi Venturas (Art); Ben Voss (Black Mamba and Frank&Stein); Anthony Stonier (Frank&Stein); John van de Ruit (Frank&Stein) and Sdumo Tsepo Mtshali (One for the Road). The two prestigious awards of the evening go to the Director of a Drama and the production itself. Nominees for director are: Greg King (Art and Crimes of the Heart); Murray McGibbon (Black Mamba and Frank&Stein) and Steven Stead (Boston Marriage). Productions nominated are Art from KickstArt; Boston Marriage from KickstArt; Crimes of the Heart from KickstArt; Frank&Stein from Sue Clarence Promotions and One for the Road from Stable Theatre.

The glitzy Durban Theatre Awards ceremony will take place on November 21 at 19h30 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. As Monday night is a “night-off” for most productions in Durban, audiences can expect to brush shoulders with who’s who on the Durban theatre scene. The evening will be along the same format as the “Oscars” with excerpts from productions interspersed with the presenting of the awards. Hosts will be avid theatre supporter and P4 Radio presenter Johanne Pillay and media personality and columnist Terrence Pillay.
