MUSINGS OF A MEANDERING MIND #2 (article first published : 2005-11-7)

My last column – if you happened to read it – spoke, towards the end, of my passion for Greek tenor, Mario Frangoulis, who touches the very essence of my soul each time he sings. Well, I’ve “met my match”, so to speak, in the passion stakes. A recent acquaintance – fast becoming a firm friend – at my local swimming pool (you’d be astonished at the range in personalities with whom you can strike up a conversation when you’re enjoying the water, the sunshine and the fresh air) has a severe case of love-struck lunacy for tennis player, Roger Federer.

Jay lives in a very lovely retirement village just above beautiful Mitchell Park in Durban and over the lunch table recently was highly indignant when another resident informed her she’d just read that pop singer Britney Spears had “become impregnated” by Roger Federer. Of course, she was confusing him – a case of Mixed Doubles, perhaps? – with a feller with a similar moniker, namely Kevin Federline! A bit of a disagreement then ensued, culminating in a bet of R10 if Jay could prove her wrong, at which point Jay – who has a quick wit – wryly observed, “In any case, seeing Roger has been on crutches for weeks, I don’t imagine it would have been a task easily accomplished!” So at this point it was, shall we say, “Love-All”.

However, just then a third lady joined the lunch table, and served up a swift ace by coming up with the correct name of Brit’s lover, the aforementioned Kevin Federline. Had there been an umpire present, I reckon it would have been a case of “Game, Set and Match” to Jay!

While on the topic of “mixed doubles”, have you noticed how the media have cottoned on to linking the names of two celebrities to form one moniker? There have been many examples in the gossip rags of late – one of the first I read being the linking of Ben Affleck’s name with that of Jennifer Lopez (otherwise known as J-Lo) to come up with Bennifer. Then, when he moved on to Jennifer Garner, they began to be referred to as Garfleck. I’ve also seen pictures of Renee Zellweger and Kenny Chesney with the caption Renken. Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz are often referred to as Camberlake, and now Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are being called TomKat!

(Just a quick aside at this point, and that is that anyone who saw Tom Cruise on the OPRAH show which aired in SA on October 27 could have no doubt about just how much in love this man is with the young woman who admits that, as a girl, it was her dream to grow up and marry him. Latest news on this couple is that she is now pregnant and the wedding is imminent.)

And, by the way, had he – that is, Tom – married his former, after he and Nicole Kidman separated, I was wondering whether she’d have had to sign her cheques “Penelope Cruz Cruise”!

I’ve also wondered whether Madonna’s husband, Guy Ritchie, should be known in future as Madguy, seeing that poor Guy’s not seeming to have much success with the films he’s produced of late.

Everyone knows Lance Armstrong for his Live-Strong campaign, and his delightful lady is the talented singer Sheryl Crow. (Have you heard her wonderful rendering of the Cole Porter classic Begin The Beguine? – Catch it on the soundtrack of the film of that amazing songwriter’s life, called De-Lovely.) What moniker can we think up for these two? Lancecrow? What do you reckon?

Then there’s the grand-daughter of Grace Kelly (or Princess Grace of Monaco) who at 19 and studying literature in Paris has been snapped by the paparazzi giggling and smooching with boyfriend Felix Winckler. As her name is Charlotte Casiraghi I was wondering if the caption for these two lovebirds will be something like Casfel, as Casiraghi “fell for” Winckler.

And now the latest news hot off the press is that Brad Pitt – he who fell for Angelina Jolie while making the film Mr and Mrs Smith and later got divorced from Jennifer Aniston (of Friends fame) - has proposed to Angelina, and that has me wondering whether the paparazzi will soon be referring to them as Brangelina? (Actually, being South African, I’ve been pondering on it and thinking that perhaps in this country we should just refer to Beautiful Boy Brad as Bradjol, since “having a jol” in South Africa means having a grand old time!)

Demi Moore and her “younger man” Ashton Kutcher (who she left Bruce Willis for) are evidently the latest newlyweds on the Hollywood scene, Demi finally deciding to go ahead with the nuptials since she’s hankering to have a child with him – and even more amazing is the fact that the couple plan to ask Bruce to be godfather to him or her (though it’s reported that Demi is seemingly hoping for a boy this time).

Enna-hoo, as a dear friend of mine is wont to say when she means “anyhow”, it’s approaching mealtime for me so I’m off to find something delicious but diabetic-friendly to consume right now. I’ll leave you with this little riddle to ponder on. If you ate pasta and antipasti in one sitting, would you still be hungry?

Well, till the next Musings from this Meandering Mind, live healthily, and enjoy every moment of every wonderful day. - Bev Pulé
