SPEED DATING (article first published : 2005-10-19)

Durban’s first ever charity Speed Dating event is taking place on October 27 from 19h00 at St Tropez Café/Bar, Musgrave. Some 50 single guys and 50 single girls will be able to take part. All money raised by ticket sales will benefit the Starfish Foundation and help South African children affected by HIV/AIDS.

Speed Dating is a craze which is becoming popular in cities all around the world. Participants in this event will have 15 three minute ‘dates’ during the course of the evening. They write down which of their ‘dates’ they would like to see again and the organisers supply contact details for people who are mutually matched. It is a great way to meet new people whilst helping children orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS.

Speed Dating organiser Eleanor Hazell, says: “Speed dating is new to Durban and some people are unsure exactly what it is, but let me assure you it is a lot of fun. The atmosphere is relaxed, it is just a cool way to hang out and meet new people. I have been a couple of times with friends in London; one friend even met her fiancé at a speed dating event. When I moved to Durban a few months ago I decided to organise a Speed Dating event for charity. HIV/AIDS is having such a devastating impact here; we are hoping to raise R5,000 to support children whose lives have been affected.”

Tickets R50 (R35 students) and include one free drink (Miller/Brutal Fruit). Costs have been sponsored so every cent raised will support Starfish. Numbers are strictly limited to 50 guys and 50 girls, so book now before it is too late. Tickets can be bought from St Tropez at 199 Essenwood Road on 031 201 9176.
