PARTY IDEAS FOR CHILDREN (article first published : 2005-07-21)

Simply put, Jenny Dodd’s Party ideas for Children is a stunner! If the amazing party scene pictures don’t grab your attention or get you “oohing” and “aahing”, then the fact that they are so easy to create will. Ideally suited to mums, caterers or any avid party organiser this book contains a myriad of various exciting ideas and information to rid you of those blank episodes just before a party.

It explains in detail how to go about preparing for a party, as well as how to create themes, décor, invitations, treat bags, dress-up parties, food stuffs, games, activities and thank-you notes. And the best part is, you need no previous experience of party planning or in being a creative fundi.

The scenes are numerous and gorgeously depicted. Choose from ‘Splish Splash’ and ‘Under The Sea’ for summer parties, or ‘Fairies’ and ‘Pink’ for girls parties. Boys are not left out of the equation with ‘Wild Wild West’ and ‘Dinosaur’ themes. For really fun events choose from the ‘Spectacular Space’ or ‘Karaoke Pop Star’ suggestions, the lists are endless.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Party Food sections (who wouldn’t?) which show you how to design treats for each event, taking the theme right down to edible levels. The recipe section is just as good, simple and easy to follow.

Any person who is involved with entertaining young people should have Party ideas for Children. Published by Struik Publishers, it is full of colour plates and easy to follow diagrams. It retails at R139.95. - Ruby Bernard
