DECOREX CRAFT (article first published : 2005-07-9)

Decorex SA has announced that One of a Kind, South Africa's premier individually crafted and contemporary applied arts trade show, will be located alongside Decorex Jhb, which runs from August 5 to 9.

Supported by the Department of Trade and Industry, the Tourism Enterprise Programme and The Johannesburg Tourism Company, One of a Kind is an initiative that is responsible for creating a national platform for South Africa's very best crafters.

"Individually crafted items are an important component of the décor and design industry - and we have some of the best craft designers in the world," says Decorex SA Director Melanie Froneman. We are truly proud to host the work of established and up-and-coming members of the craft industry alongside Decorex Jhb. Having One of a Kind in the same venue as Decorex Jhb strengthens our commitment to promoting the local design industry and can only enhance the experience of visitors to Decorex SA”

Says the dti Senior Manager Cultural Industries, Nadia Sujee: "The craft industry in South Africa has the potential to be amongst the best in the world. The industry has an excellent range of designs and products that are unique and are able to combine a variety of very rich and expressive cultures that capture the imagination of the public. The One of a Kind exhibition intends to become the premier craft exhibition in the Southern African region and has commitment from both the government and the private sector for the coming few years."

Froneman believes the integration of One of a Kind and Decorex Jhb will be of mutual benefit for the exhibitors on both shows as it will ensure a cross-pollination of audiences and ideas. "Hosting One of a Kind falls in line with Decorex SA's repositioning as a champion of the local design industry," she says.

"One of our aims is to showcase the best of student and young designers thereby providing as yet unknown designers with a platform to display their talents. It is part of our contribution to skills development and sustainable job creation. Our crafters have proven themselves in the international arena, including outlets like the Conran Shop. It is our aim to assist them in expanding their markets and getting their products into homes here and abroad.

"Decorex Jhb is playing an increasingly active part in promoting South African design here and internationally. Last year we attracted a record number of just over 2,500 members of the local trade, from architects to interior designers and retail outlet owners, as well as 35 international visitors from London, France, India, Zimbabwe and Pakistan."

The integration of One of a Kind and Decorex Jhb will serve the purpose of creating market access for the crafters and exposing Decorex Jhb's 55,000-strong, loyal audience to new and innovative products.
