ANGLO-BOER WAR COMMEMORATION (article first published : 1999-10-10)

On October 16 at 13h00, as part of the Anglo-Boer War Commemoration, there will be a symbolic welcome of British forces and auxiliaries at dockside - N Shed, with the accompaniment of pipe bands, to be welcomed by the Metro Mayor, Cllr Obed Mlaba. At 15h00, a steam train will take visitors to the formal opening of photographic, numismatic, philatelic and militaria exhibitions. Of particular interest is Not Only a White Man's War at 74 Brigade, Lord's Grounds, Old Fort Rd, (opposite St John's) which will remain open until October 20. This gives an overview of the war with particular emphasis as to what happened in Durban.

On October 18 at 13h00, there will be the unveiling of a replica 4,7 inch Naval gun on a carriage as designed by Captain Percy Scott and constructed in the Natal Government Railways Workshop. This replica, the only one in the world, has been donated by HMS Excellent, Whale Island Museum Portsmouth. It will be unveiled at Locomotive Plaza adjacent to the Workshop Shopping Centre.

A dramatic highlight of the commemoration takes place on October 19 at 13h00 with the re-enactment of Winston Churchill's speech from the Durban City Hall steps with the participation of his grand-daughter, the Hon Celia Sandys. This follows a costume parade throughout the Durban city centre which will end in a ceremony on the steps which will include choirs and bands. At 19h00, a multi-cultural event takes place in the City Hall featuring traditional music and songs, both civilian and military, representing all those involved in the war. Tickets R15 (R5 pupils)
