WOMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD (article first published : 2005-04-4)

South Africans now have only six weeks in which to submit nominations for South Africa’s premier accolade for achievement by women.

In the year that the Shoprite Checkers/SABC 2 Woman of the Year Award celebrates its tenth anniversary as a major initiative for National Women’s Day, ace swimmer Natalie du Toit is calling on everybody in South Africa to join in the search by nominating worthy women they know.

She comments: "It is great that women in sport are being recognised through this Award. Great women are getting recognition for the work that they do. It is also great that the organisers of the Award keep the previous winners involved with the Award, by having them participate in the Award ceremony and on days like today.

"The fact that there are different categories women can compete in, ensures that every woman in South Africa has a chance to compete. It has been a great ten years for the Award and hopefully it will continue for many more years. The Shoprite Checkers/SABC 2 Woman of the Year Award inspires people to do great things and I believe everyone should have a dream and a goal, and not let tragedies put them down."

In this milestone anniversary year, the Award will again announce an overall winner selected from winners in the following categories: arts, culture and communications; business entrepreneurs; education; health; science and technology; social welfare; and sport.

Each of the seven category winners of the 2005 Shoprite Checkers/SABC 2 Woman of the Year Award will receive R10,000 in prize money, while the overall winner will receive R30,000 in prize money.

Nomination forms are available from Shoprite or Checkers stores, via the Internet at www.sawoman.co.za, by contacting the organisers on 011 465 5225, or by e-mail: sawoman@calibro.co.za and the closing date for entries is May 11 2005.
